How to stop WhatsApp to share Mobile Number with Facebook

It’s been around more than two years that Facebook has officially acquired Whatsapp to expand the digital marketing landscape. Despite Whatsapp CEO Jan Koum said that user privacy wouldn’t suffer, the services are about to get a little bit friendlier with their data sharing.

Whatsapp has changed its privacy policy; in its new privacy policy it gives permission to share data, including your phone number, with Facebook. In an FAQ, WhatsApp says it is doing this to:

• More accurately count unique users.
• Better fights spam and abuse.
• Show better friend suggestions and more relevant ads to you on Facebook.

In a blog post, Whatsapp stated the reason behind this data sharing that highlights its plan to test the ways to communicate with businesses.

“Whether it’s hearing from your bank about a potential fraudulent transaction, or getting notified by an airline about a delayed flight, many of us get this information elsewhere, including in text messages and phone calls. We want to test these features in the next several months”.

What can be done to avoid this sharing of information between Whatsapp and Facebook?

There are two ways to opt out the sharing your account information with Facebook for targeting purposes.

Method 1:

On WhatsApp, don’t click Agree when it asks you to confirm you are happy with the change of terms. Instead, click read more. You should then see a check box or control button at the bottom of the screen which says “Share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook to improve my Facebook ads and product experiences”, Uncheck this.

Method 2:

If you have already agreed to the updated terms, you can go to to Settings > Account > Share my account info in the app. Then uncheck the box or toggle the control. But quick, WhatsApp says you only have 30 days to make this choice after agreeing to the new terms.

It seems that you can’t completely opt out this, as Whatsapp says that your information is sent to Facebook for other purposes such as improving infrastructure and delivery systems, understanding how its services are being used, securing systems, and fighting spam, abuse, or infringement activities.

So, it’s clear that somehow few of your information are accessible to the Facebook in a secure and reliable way. The only way to avoid this information sharing is to avoid the use of Whatsapp.

Malware Stealing Money by Pretending to be Whatsapp, GooglePlay and Other Famous Apps

Hackers always seek to steal money from credit cards and other financial information. They are actively stealing credit card and other financial information using malware. In Europe, a new malware is originated that can spoof the user interfaces of Uber, Whatsapp, Google Play, Youtube and few other messaging apps.

This malware is already spread in countries like Denmark, Italy and Germany. The old traditional Phishing technique is used to deploy and spread this malware.

Phishing is the attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details. In Phishing attack a clone is created of a website that acquires personal information from victim that is then emailed to the attacker.

In this case, the malware has been spreading through a Phishing campaign over SMS (Short Messaging Service). Once downloaded, the malware will create fake user interfaces of different apps on the phone. These interfaces further ask for credit card information and then send the entered data to the attacker.

This family of malware continues to evolve, earlier in February 2016 FireEyehad observed 55 malicious programs with same technique used. The earlier version was spoofing banking websites, but now this malware can spoof more popular applications like Youtube, Whatsapp and Google Play.

Users tend to input credit card information into these applications, FireEye researcher Wu Zhou said:

"Threat actors usually want to gain the largest financial benefit. So they typically target these apps that have a large user base”.

Nowadays, tricking victims into clicking on your malicious link is an easy task. The attacker used some easy tricks to make their links appealing to be clicked. To spread the malware, the hackers have sent a SMS messages with a link and tricked their victims into clicking on it. The SMS message said: “We could not deliver your order. Please check your shipping information here”.

According to research by FireEye, this malware is spread by five different campaigns and in one campaign hackers managed to get 130,000 clicks on their links where the malware was hosted.

Newer version of malware will be more powerful and undetectable, as only six out of 54 antivirus tools tested noticed the malicious coding behind these messages and emails. This malware is now has been found on servers in United Arab Emirates, Germany, Italy and the Netherland.

whatsapp and other messenger might be banned by the United Kingdom government #whatsapp

It was decades ago that George Orwell predicted in his novel 1984 that the governments will be involved in the surveillance of its own citizens and the same is now proposed by the UK government which mandates that all social media messenger service providers to switch off their end to end encryption services thereby allowing the government to access the details of the messages, communication and chat history and other details of the users.

If the service providers do not comply with this requirements, their services would be banned in the UK. The new law shall be a part of the Investigatory Powers Bill which is termed as the Snooper’s Charter and it was mentioned by the Queen in her Speech in the current year. The bill, if passed will empower the government to bar the services of the instant messenger applications which do not comply with this guideline of the government.

Messengers like the Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, SnapChat and iMessage will come under the purview of the new law which is already in the parliament and which might be applicable later this year. According to the British Prime Minister David Cameron, such a law is essential to ensure the safety of the citizens of the UK. He stated this in the context of the attack on the French Newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

The major intent behind this law is to make it mandatory for the service providers of these messengers to record all the messages and activities that take place on their network. The growing threat of terrorism is the reason cited for such laws world over; however such laws only infringe with the personal lives of the citizens in their respective countries thereby imposing a surveillance system on them that will infringe into their privacy.
