OpenVPN Desktop client affected by a critical CSRF flaw

http://www.ehacking.net/2014/07/openvpn-desktop-client-affected-by.htmlResearchers at SEC Consult have discovered a CSRF vulnerability in the OpenVPN Desktop Client that can allow remote code execution.

Security researchers at SEC Consult have discovered a CSRF flaw in the OpenVPN Desktop client and promptly reported it to the company in May. OpenVPN Desktop Client for its Access Server is an SSL VPN for a variety of platforms. The vulnerability only affects Windows versions of the application.

In response to the discovery, OpenVPN issued a security advisory to warn its customers of the presence of a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in its Desktop Client which could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely.

“All Access Server customers using the ‘Desktop Client’ app for Windows should upgrade immediately to the OpenVPN Connect client.  The ‘Desktop Client’ is obsolete and is no longer maintained or available for download. This client contains a CSRF (Cross Site Request Forgery) vulnerability that can allow remote code execution by a malicious web site,”
“It is also bundled with an older version of OpenSSL that has not received recent OpenSSL security updates.  This advisory only applies to the OpenVPN Access Server ‘Desktop Client’ app for Windows, and does not affect OpenVPN Connect, Private Tunnel, or community builds of OpenVPN for Windows.” OpenVPN reported in the advisory.

Experts at SEC Consult have verified that vulnerabilities affect OpenVPN Access Server “Desktop Client” version 1.5.6, which was the most recent version at the time of discovery. Also, any other versions of the product are affected by the flaw.

OpenVPN is requesting its customers to update the Desktop Client to avoid attacks which exploit the CSRF flaw.
“Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code and execute other attacks on computers with the OpenVPN Access Server “Desktop Client” installed. Affected users should upgrade immediately to the OpenVPN Connect client.” the SEC Consult advisory states.

The attacker has to trick the user, running a vulnerable version of OpenVPN,  in to visit a malicious site.
“The OpenVPN Access Server ‘Desktop Client’ consists of two parts, a Windows service that offers an XML-RPC API via a webserver on localhost and a GUI component that connects to this API,”
“The XML-RPC API is vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF). Using the API commands an attacker can: unmask a victim (e.g. by disconnecting an established VPN connection), perform MITM attacks (by connecting the victim to an ‘evil’ VPN server), execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges (by adding a VPN profile that executes code).”

SEC Consult has provided a video proof of concept for the OpenVPN Access Server ‘Desktop Client’ vulnerability.

Virtual Private Networks, Another Way To Ensure Privacy

Before we get to the interesting part, first a little bit introduction about what a VPN is -
Put simply, a Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a group of computers (or discrete networks) networked together over a public network—namely, the internet. Businesses use VPNs to connect remote datacenters, and individuals can use VPNs to get access to network resources when they're not physically on the same LAN (local area network), or as a method for securing and encrypting their communications when they're using an untrusted public network. When you connect to a VPN, you usually launch a VPN client on your computer (or click a link on a special website), log in with your credentials, and your computer exchanges trusted keys with a far away server. Once both computers have verified each other as authentic, all of your internet communication is encrypted and secured from eavesdropping. (lifehacker)
So basically, what happens here is that the data you send is protected from eavesdropping. It is encrypted in  a way that can't be decrypted easily. So, other than the two methods discussed earlier, VPN is a method to stay anonymous too.

What are the advantages of using a VPN?

  1. Your data is encrypted.
  2. No-one can eavesdrop your communications.
  3. Your privacy is ensured.
  4. You can pretend to be someone you are not (You wanna use some service which is banned in your country, VPN is the answer).
  5. You can overcome browsing restrictions imposed on you.

What makes a good VPN?

  1. Price - Hell yeah, it should be priced reasonably (did I forget to mention VPNs are not free of cost)
  2. Free? Yeah, there are some free VPNs too. They serve you ads and are more or less useless. They dont do what they promise. They are good for beginners though, who want to learn, and privacy is not much of a problem.
  3. They should use SSL. If you have no idea what this means, then, simply put, its the best protocol the VPNs use, and all others come next to SSL. (other protocols have their own pros and cons)
  4. Logging- Some VPNs log your data. Not good.
  5. Exit location - There must be a lot of them. That is, you can pretend to be a lot of people. Also, if there are very less exit locations, then it will affect browsing.

How VPNs work?

If you need more info, google it. I'm not going to name specific VPN service for you, all have their pros and cons. You'll have to do your homework. However, if you need reference, then lifehacker has a good article about it.

Keep Your Online Personal Identity as Secure as Possible

It’s kind of scary! It’s like walking around your house naked with all the blinds and curtains open, giving a show to every peeping Tom. That’s what surfing the Internet without doing anything to protect your privacy is like. Anyone… and I mean ANYONE can see what you do online, what websites you visit, when you surf online, whether you store personal and financial data on your computer ….and more. However, this doesn’t have to be the status quo. You can take action and protect yourself from cyber criminals, peeping Toms, and anyone else who loves to stick their nose where it doesn’t belong. Just because your default Internet surfing is too public, doesn’t mean you should stop using the Internet. No… you just need to hang some curtains and put in those blinds. There are actually 7 safe-surfing activities you can practice to better ensure your privacy. Still, these are just ‘best practice’ Internet surfing methods and can’t offer you absolute secure protection. The only way of ensuring your complete and total privacy is by contracting Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.

How to Surf Anonymously?

If you thought that no one knows what you are doing online, then you were definitely wrong. Nowadays almost anyone can track down your online surfing habits, find exactly which sites you've visited, and make a comprehensive profile about your likes, dislikes and searching preferences. The federal government, private businesses, web sites and search engines, they're all capable to observe your activity and store cookies on your computer for further tracking purposes. However, there are few things you can do to protect your online identity. Read on to find the easy ways of surfing anonymously:

Use VPNs

A Virtual Private Network (commonly referred as VPN) is basically a network which allows users to connect to each other or to remote sites through a secured tunnel created within a public network. It relies on "virtual" connections which are routed through the Web, from the company's private domain to the remote site or user, thus eliminating the need for physical connections. In other words, a VPN is a private network built over a public infrastructure, such as the Internet.
VPNs can be successfully used for Anonymous Surfing, Bypassing geographical restrictions, hiding real IP addresses, Bypassing ISP Blocks, and for secure VOIP communication over Skype, Yahoo messenger, and other online chat clients.

Use Proxy Servers

Proxies have been used for years to bypass the network limitations and to surf anonymously, but they have one major disadvantage over VPNs: they are only able to filter the data which goes through a web browser, and hence your identity will still be exposed when using other sharing or communication programs. Anyhow, proxies are still great for navigating to certain web sites without revealing your identity or location.
To find out which public proxy server is the best, you have to know its uptime and required access time first. To do this you can consult a free proxy servers list, such as the one from PublicProxyServers.com.

Make Use of Tor

Tor is one of the best free software applications which can be used for anonymous surfing. When using Tor, your entire communications will be encrypted and protected from curious looks, and that includes web surfing, instant messaging, data sharing and more.

Setting up Tor is pretty straightforward. First of all, you'll have to download the client from their site, plus an additional proxy program, such as Privoxy. All these software is self-configuring, and thus you won't have to dribble around with port settings, intervals and so on.
Once you have installed Tor, it will appear as a small icon in the system tray. To start it, simply right click that icon and select "Start". Once you got it running, all you have to do is browse the Internet as usual. In case you're extra worried about your identity you may also change your Tor identity regularly, just to make it harder for websites or government to track you down. To do that, simply right click the Tor icon, and choose "New Identity". That's all you're required to do.
There's only one disadvantage of Tor which is worthy to be mentioned: you'll notice a small connection lag at times. This simply comes and goes and there's not much you can do about it, aside from hoping that it will get fixed in a future Tor version.

Conclusions

Out of all the above-mentioned methods, VPNs come down as the best way to surf anonymously. They simply don't have any downsides, and they are able to encrypt all the data which passes through your computer.

So the question how to make this connection secure and how to protect the credential information of user. The users that are using unencrypted wifi connection they are at risk their information can stolen by doing a small sniffing and by using the tool like firesheep. So the exact solution is VPN (virtual private network), VPN is not for only windows, Linux and MAC. Mobile devices and their software's also support to us it. There are many free VPN services also available but for this article discuss about Mobile VPN or Mobile virtual private network.

What Is Mobile VPN

Mobile VPN or MVPN gives a feature for the user to use virtual private network while they are moving, VPN ensure the security of the data. There are mainly three parties involve in a VPN.
  • VPN server
  • VPN Client
  • Internet
Most of the VPN are using a protocol named PPTP (Point-to-point-tunneling protocol), the main goal of VPN protocol is to provide a secure channel so the information does not stole by any means. Another protocol is IPsec ( Internet Protocol Security), it is the latest and modern VPN protocol that provides more feature for enhancing the security like authentication, key exchange between the parties and encryption of data.

VPN for iOS

If you are using Apple devices like Ipad, Iphone and Ipod touch than you can use VPN services to connect with the network (Internet) just on windows and Linux. Apple devices can handle PPTP with shared secret, L2TP with IPSec and IPSec with XAUTH.

VPN for Android

Just like Apple products Android also support PPTP with shared secret, L2TP and L2TP/IPsec, there are different vpn services available for Android and 5 VPN is among the best.

Create Your Own VPN Using Windows XP

Before reading this article it is recommended to read the first episode of Virtual Private Network (VPN) click here to read.

As we have described on previous article that VPN is secure and uses encryption technique and create a virtual tunnel for communication, Windows XP provides a certain level of security by using Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) or Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). They are both considered tunneling protocols – simply because they create that virtual tunnel.

If you want to create a VPN on Windows XP client that you do not need any third party tool or software, just follow the steps to configure your virtual private network.

  • Go on Control Panel than double click on network connection.
  • Create a new connection in network task.
  • Network wizard is start click next.

  • Choose the option "Connect to the network at my workplace" than press next.

  • Click on Virtual Private Network than press next.

  • Than it will ask you to type the host name or IP of the host, you can change this later. Type the host name and the IP of the computer to whom you want to connect.
  • It may ask about smart card, you are about to done the wizard.
  • It time to customize the connection you can reach your connection by your desktop if you made a shortcut while wizard or you reach it by network connection, than right click on it and click on the properties.
  • The first Tab is the general tab which show the detail of the connection, you can change your setting here.

  • The next is the option tab, at this tab you have various option to choose from you can change the redialing setting.

  • The next tab is very important and it is security tab, at this you can configure basic security for your VPN client.

  • Then the next is networking tab, you can choose what networking item used in VPN connection.
  • last is the advance tab for configure firewall settings.
  • Now the time is to connect your host to whom you setup the VPN open you connection type the user-name and password than connect your host via secure channel.

Virtual Private Network

Let us a scenario in which a company has offices in the US and Europe, the head office are in US while three regional offices are in Europe, now the company has to connect their three offices to the head office. One solution is to use leased lines in which the company has to connect the local ISP(Internet Service Provider) via T1(North American Standard) or E1(European Standard) lines,
for good performance the company need high speed connection means high data rate.

The main problem is security, how the data of the company secure. The first solution means leased line is costly and require regular maintenance.

Now the new term has been used and that is VPN or Virtual Private Network. VPN is private network that uses public network like Internet to connect remote sites and remote user's together. Instead using a separate (dedicated) line or Leased line a VPN established virtual connection routed through public network (Internet).

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network.                             -Wikipedia

Means by using VPN you can easily connect your office computer at home and you can do your task easily and securely. VPN connection is very secure because the whole communication take place under some cryptographic algorithm that makes your data more secure, so it is recommended to use VPN while using public networks like on coffee shop or any other wifi spot.

VPN Architecture

Three main component acting on a virtual private network:
  • VPN Server
  • VPN Client
  • Public Network(Internet)
The main component is server, server is the computer on which a VPN service runs, it receives the incoming and new request from its client(User's). Server is responsible for secure path allocation means the authentication encryption etc.Server acts as a gateway for each client to allow them to use private network.
Public network is usually a local telecommunication network, Internet which provides the connection between VPN client and VPN server.

Advantages Of Virtual Private Network

  • Low telecommunication costs, VPN can eliminated the need of long distance and expensive leased lines and low maintainable cost.
  • High security through encryption, authentication and integration.
  • Network can be access from anywhere.
  • Performance is good and high data rate can be achieve with the reliable bandwidth and efficiency.
  • Mobile user's can use high speed broadband connectivity.

Denial Of Service Attack [Episode 1]

On 6th February 2000, Yahoo portal was shut down for 3 hours. Then retailer Buy.com Inc. (BUYX) was hit the next day, hours after going public. By that evening, eBay (EBAY), Amazon.com (AMZN), and CNN (TWX) had gone dark. And in the morning, the mayhem continued with online broker E*Trade (EGRP) and others having traffic to their sites virtually choked off. (Business Week Online, 12 February 2000)

On 6th August 2009, twitter was the victim. Lot of people had trouble on logging on twitter,It was brought down by denial of service attack.
                                                                              -Reported by CNN's Don Lemon

What is a Denial Of Service Attack?

● Denial of service attack is an attack in which attacker try to crash the system or to make the computer resource unavailable to its legal users, if an attacker is unable to gain access into a server, the attacker most probably will just crash it.
● Denial of service (DOS) attack is the process of sending a large number of packets to the target that interfere with its operation, or just crash it.

Types of DOS attacks:

Common DOS attacks are
Smurf
● Smurf attack some time refer as Amplification attack, ICMP(Internet Control Message Protocol) flood attack or Fraggle Attack.
● A smurf attack uses spoofing and broadcast addressing to amplify a single packet to multiple packets.
● Three major parties of this attack are.
The attacker
The intermediary (a router) also known as smurf amplifier
The victim

● In Smurf attack an attacker first spoof the source IP address of the victim, generates a large amount of ICMP echo traffic toward IP broadcast addresses. The intermediary receives an ICMP echo request packet directed to the IP broadcast address of their network.

● Each host that receives the broadcast responds back to the real source IP with an echo reply, this attack can be done with both ICMP packets and UDP echo packets(Fraggle attack).

Solution
● Turn off the forwarding of directed broadcast on all router ports.
● Configure each hosts and routers not to respond or reply to ping request
● Use network Ingress filtering.

SYN Flooding● SYN flooding is an another type of DOS attack in which an attacker generates Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) request faster of the system processing capabilities, in SYN flooding an attacker take advantages of TCP handshaking process.

● TCP handshaking process involve three steps to establish a connection.
1. In first step client send a TCP Synchronize(SYN) packet to the server.
2. Server receives a SYN packet and send a Synchronize-Acknowledgement (SYNACK)
packet back to the client(host).
3. Client receives SYN-ACK packet and sends Acknowledge(ACK), and the connection is established.

To Be Continued on the next part we will share some codes to launch a SYN Flooding Attack.

Introduction To Firewalls: 2

On a previous tutorial you have learnt some basis about firewalls, and on previous tutorial we have categorized firewalls into two types by their construction, now in this tutorial we are going to share some advance knowledge and we will categorize firewalls by their application.

How Firewalls Work

To understand the working of  firewalls is not enough difficult as many people think. The working of firewall is depend on some steps.

  • When you start communicating to other computers or device over the Internet, your computers follow the TCP 3-way handshaking process, in general your computer send a request to the network for the sake of communication.

  • If you have a firewall on your computer, then first firewall check that request and compare it with different types of rules and regulation of the firewall.
  • Firewall also checking the source of networking and web-hosting and than firewall makes decision either file to be transfer or deny.
  • The rules and regulation of the firewall set by the administrator of the computer or a network.
  • Firewall also work on the authentication process for the safe communication, if some thing is missing in the authentication it will block the whole communication.

Firewalls can be divided by their configuration techniques or application.

Network-Level Firewalls or Packet filtering

Network layer firewalls, also called packet filters. It generally make their decisions based on the source address, destination address and ports in individual IP packets. A simple router is the traditional network layer firewall.

Application-layer Firewalls

Application-level firewalls looking more deeply into the application that communicate to the internet, it restrict the rules for the application like TCP,FTP,Telnet or UDP etc.
Application-level filtering may include protection against spam and viruses as well, and be able to block undesirable Web sites based on content rather than just their IP address.
