21,000 Customer's Bank Details Hacked| TalkTalk |

TalkTalk is one of the biggest broadband and phone service provider in the United Kingdom. A few days earlier it suffered a major breach of information when its servers were hacked and the data belonging to its over 4 million customers was compromised. In connection with this hack, the police arrested a 15 year old buy on whom the hacking was pinned to.

He was arrested after a police raid on a house in Liverpool that led to the arrest of the boy from the Antrim County in Liverpool. The company suffered a major blow due to this hacking incident and its shares in the stock exchanges in the UK fell significantly after the customers as well as investors displayed their concerns about the security measures taken by such companies.

Initially it was thought that the incident of the data security breach compromised the information of the all the 4 million users of the company. However, the company was soon to refute these claims stating that the attack was significantly less intense and damaging to the company then thought. In an official statement, the company stated that the information leaked was less significant and not useful to hackers. Information such as credit card numbers had been stored as “xxxx” in parts instead of completely storing them in numbers.

The company has now declared the actual number of affected users. It has been stated that bank account details around 21,000 of the customers of the company were stolen. In addition, debit and credit card details of around 28,000 customers were stolen and the names, email addresses and the phone numbers of 1.2 million customers were leaked.

TalkTalk has been a victim of such attacks twice earlier in this year. It faced similar attacks in February and then again in August. The three attacks pose serious security concerns about the company’s initiatives to tackle them.

Emails of CIA Director posted online by WikiLeaks

The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks has in its latest exploits posted personal details of the CIA Director John Brennan. The personal details include Brennan’s residential address, social security number of his wife, his personal health history and other sensitive and personal information. The information was leaked after the emails of Brennan were hacked.

The hack was done by an American hacker who hacked into the accounts of John Brennan and Jen Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security. The unknown hacker hacked information includes details of Brennan even before he was a part of the current Barrack Obama administration. Among the official information accessed from the emails were Brennan’s employment application form and drafts of intelligence reports.

The hacked emails belonged to the personal email account of Brennan and although they included information about intelligence reports, projects and details of his company “The Analysis Corp.”, not much of the leaked information has anything sensitive or top secret. The employment form found in the hacked emails belonged to the application for the National Security Position. It is a lengthy form with 48 pages and was filled by Brennan in November 2008, almost 4 years before he was actually appointed as the CIA Director.

This act by WikiLeaks has been termed as criminal by the CIA. They have strongly opposed this action and the CIA along with the FBI are investigating the matter. WikiLeaks is popular after it posted a large volume of governmental documents that were leaked by Edward Snowden. Snowden has since feared for his life and is living in a temporary asylum in Russia from 2012.

Several government officials in the US have been targeted by hackers and it seems that not even the Director of CIA is immune to such attacks!

UK ISPs block several pirate domains

Piracy is a global concern and the entertainment industry world over has been fighting the menace of the pirated stuff that adversely impacts their business. Despite their attempts to keep piracy at bay, piracy is only becoming more common. There, however seems some relief for the makers of the original thing, at least in the United Kingdom.

Since April 2012, several of these producers of the original works such as the BPI, MPA and book publishers have been successfully obtaining court orders getting the ISPs block various pirated sites. Premier League is the latest entrant and ah successfully got Row Sports blocked. As per the court ruling in April 2012, Pirate Bay was the first website to be blocked. Since then there have been 100s of ISPs that have been subsequently blocked.

The latest blocking order has mandated the various Internet Service Providers, including the six major ISPs of the United Kingdom to block 90 more domains. The domains blocked under this order and also the previous ones belong to torrent sharing websites, pirated and illegal video streaming websites and unauthorised broadcasting services.

The order also mandates blocking of duplicate and mirror websites of the originally banned websites. The entertainment industry majors who have got these blocking orders against such websites can add domain names to the list and the ISPs have to block them.

Every year entertainment industry loses out on millions of dollars globally and has to suffer due to piracy. The requirement to take stringent steps against such illegal mediums such as pirate websites is high and it is about time when such court orders are taken seriously by the ISPs.

But, the entire process has a catch. Several times the domains are blocked without proper notification to the users who are bemused to suddenly see these websites being blocked on their screens when they try to access them.

Apple bans over 250 apps from its App Store

Apple has banned more than 250 apps from the Apple App Store after it was found that these applications were gathering and transferring personal information of the users such as their email addresses, other apps that are installed on their devices and even the serial numbers of their peripherals such as battery and camera.

These apps were unearthed by the internet security firm SourceDNA that found that an app that updates the searchlight of the mobile devices was snooping on the private API (Application Programming Index) of the device on which it was running. This led to further investigation and SourceDNA discovered that there are around 256 such apps that access the private APIs of the users and steal their information.

Further investigations revealed that these apps were developed by various Chinese developers who have been using an SDK from Youmi, a China based advertising company. Youmi has been involved in such practices for around 2 years now which means that millions of users have been affected by such apps.

Apple has taken an immediate note of it and has banned these apps from its App Store. Apple has always warned its users of not downloading apps from sources other than Apple authorised sourced. However, users do not even remotely assumed that the apps downloaded from the App Store of Apple itself can contain malicious codes.

It was just a few weeks ago when we saw XcodeGhost, a fake Xcode for developing Apple apps. It also originated in China and unassuming app developers, especially in China who are affected by the slow download from various sources including Apple instead inadvertently downloaded the fake Xcode – XcodeGhost. When they developed apps using the fake Xcode, the malicious codes were transferred to these apps that were later uploaded to Apple App Store and were downloaded by a large number of users.

One Of The Most Common Passwords In The World Is 123456 | Ashley Madison |

Ashley Madison is a popular dating website that has been frequently accused of enticing married individuals to cheat on their partners and find partners on the website for dating. On 19th August 2015, “The Impact Team” a hacking group penetrated the website and extracted information about the users of the website of Ashley Madison.

They posted details of who the users are on online forums. Apart from this information they also posted login ids and passwords of 11.7million Ashley Madison users. The list of the users leaked online included regular people with some of them in very high position.

These people were negatively affected by the leak and now have their reputation tarnished. Among the passwords posted on the online forums, there are some very common and easy to guess passwords. These passwords were cracked using MD5 algorithm. It also shows that among 11.7 million users, just 4.86 million had used unique passwords. Others used very simple passwords that
can be cracked easily by using various brute force methods.

These passwords include:
·         123456
·         12345
·         password
·         DEFAULT
·         123456789
·         qwerty
·         12345678
·         abc123
·         pussy
·         1234567

These passwords are some very common passwords and therefore it is very easy to crack them by using the trial and error methods used by brute force techniques.
It shows that these users took their security lightly and were not bothered to use more secure passwords.

The incident brings to light two important points – the safety of the passwords used by people commonly and how safe are websites like Ashley Madison?
The first point about the safety of the passwords shows that people are not bothered and do not think that they can be affected. It is the reason why websites make it mandatory to use alpha-numeric and character combinations for the passwords which was clearly missing in the case of Ashley Madison.

The second point shows the vulnerability of sites like these and hence people must avoid using them.

Anonymous Says It’s World War 3 Are They Sure ? | Anonymous | World War 3 |

In a video posted on YouTube by the hacktivist group Anonymous, it’s been said that the current global geo-political turmoil is nothing else but World War 3. Anonymous might have nailed it and their arguments sound logical.

Anonymous has made several claims in its video and has backed it with evidences such as interviews of former top officials and other scientific facts that cannot be simply ignored. The hactivist group has said that there are major political powers behind the origin of instabilities in many parts of the world and especially in the Middle-East.

The video shows an interview of Hilary Clinton stating how the US governments have in the past funded rebels in countries like Afghanistan. These rebels then turned into jihadists and attacked USA and American forces. Taliban is an example of this where the US governments supported the rebels against the former USSR. United States wanted to control the Middle-East and South-East Asia and at the peak of Cold War in the 80s, it was the focal point of the government to reduce the influence of the USSR in this region and exert its own control.

But, soon after these rebels supported by the US turned their weapons (given to them by the US government) on to their former masters. The attack on the twin towers on 9/11 is an example. But the video also claims the validity of the attack. According to one conspiracy theory stated in the video, it has doubted the claim that the burning jet fuel of the planes hitting the twin towers melted the steel body of the buildings. The video claims that the heating point of jet fuel is much lower than the melting point of the steel.

There are various conspiracy theories doing the round. But one fact cannot be denied is that the disturbance caused by groups like Taliban and ISIS and the problems between countries such as Russia-Ukraine, Iran-Iraq, Israel-Palestine and other countries could be flashpoints of a larger global war – World War 3.

Twin Brothers Arrested For Hacking Into State Department Networks

Twin brothers Sohaib Akhter and Muneeb Akhter have been sentenced for imprisonment for hacking into the networks of the State Department. Sohaib has been sentenced for 24 months while Muneeb has been jailed for 39 months in prison. They have been convicted with the charges of computer frauds. The twins, 23 have been accused of using Sohaib’s position as a State Department contractor for accessing the confidential information.

In the month of February 2015, Sohaib who was working with the State Department gained access to confidential information of his colleagues, former employees and an agent with the law enforcement department. This agent was investigating the earlier criminal activities of these brothers. They were earlier accused of stealing credit card information and other personal details of people.

The twins had planned to install a small device on the server of the State Department. It would have given then unrestricted access to any of the information remotely. But the device broke as they were trying to install it. The brothers have been accused of harming companies and other individuals through their activities. Similar to Sohaib, Muneeb too in the month of November 2013 accessed database of a company in Rockville, Maryland where he was employed. He installed malware on the servers of the company of his employment to gather more votes for an online contest in which he was participating. He also used to server to send spam mails to over 10 thousand students of George Mason University asking them for their votes.

Both of them have pleaded guilty for the charges under which they have been accused of in June 2015. Mueeb is also charged and he subsequently pleaded guilty for falsifying information and for the obstruction of justice.

Edward Cryptickiller Creates The Biggest Wordlist Containing 4.9 Million Passwords | Wordlist | Hacking |

Online threats, it seems despite all the security measures have only been increasing. Although there are significant efforts from the various governments and also the fact that the world now has more cyber security experts than ever before, the security threats only seem to increase exponentially.
In recent times we have seen a lot of hacks on government websites and other social media websites where the cyber criminals have posted millions of ids and passwords online. A very recent threat has been the creation of the biggest wordlist ever created. It has been created by Edward Cryptickiller and has very 4.9 million passwords in the list.

The list is pretty comprehensive and is very useful for cyber criminals who can easily download the list from the website of Edward Cryptkiller and use if for brute force attacks. The list contains frequently used passwords and it cans easily crack even the most complicated and encrypted of the ids.

A brute force attack tries several passwords in an automated manner one after the other till it inserts the right password in the password field. At this point, the password is cracked and the attacker gets an access to the login credentials of the users.

There seems to be an immediate need to counter such threats. With the growing use of the internet, more than half of the world’s population is online. It also means that their confidential and sensitive information is also online and its security is threatened by such cyber criminals.

The rising threat of terrorism has resulted in a kind of cyber terrorism who are much more dangerous than the regular cyber criminals. They target not just individuals but also governments. The need of the hour is to counter this threat immediately and take corrective steps to reduce the menace they create.

FBI arrests the hacker who was its own informant

In a bizarre incident, the FBI has arrested 70 hackers in an operation to bust a hacking forum. Out of the 12 Americans against whom the charges were filed, one of them is actually an informant who worked with the FBI to help them gain access to the hackers’ forum.

The operation is termed to be the largest till date and involved bringing down a forum named Darkode. It is an online forum protected by passwords and was used as a medium by hackers to sell sensitive information such as the passwords, tools and methods to hack computers as well as was used to share and sell malware applications.

Darkode, according to the authorities is the largest malware sharing forum in the world and involved trading of botnets. Botnets are the computers that are infected with the malware and the access to these computers are sold to hackers who can then become botnet operators by acquiring the access to these computers. The operation to bring down Darkode was christened ‘Operation Shrouded Horizon’ and was initiated a year and half ago. Rory Stephan Guidry, a 28 year old man from Louisiana has worked with the FBI in the past and hence he was approached by the FBI to help them bust Darkode.

The process to become a member of the forum required hackers to be invited by an existing forum member after which the invited members had to display their hacking skills. To prove his efficiency and to gain the trust of other forum members, Guidry stole the botnet of Lizard Squad that brought down PlayStation and Xbox live networks on the Christmas Day last year. Guidry supplied this code to the forum to gain their trust and get onto the inside from where he helped the FBI.

Despite this, Guidry himself was charged and arrested by the FBI claiming that that he shared malware and allowed the other forum members to gain an access to the botnet. Despite working for the interests of the FBI, Guidry is behind the bars and this will deter other hackers in the future to trust the federal agencies such as the FBI.

Bharti Airtel launches 4G services

Bharti Airtel announced the launch of its 4G services on 6thAugust and has introduced its Infinity Plans in 296 cities in India. Reliance Jio has planned for the launch of its 4G services in December, but Airtel has taken the lead by launching it months before Reliance.

The objective of the company for the launch of the 4G service on such a large scale is to reduce the burden of revenue generation from its Voice Services. Voice Services currently account for 75 percent of the total revenue of Bharti Airtel and the company seems to have planned to increase its market share in the internet segment by launching the 4G services. This is expected to increase the revenue of the company considerably.

For the existing customers of Airtel in these 296 cities, upgrading to 4G is fairly easy. They will by default receive an SMS allowing them to upgrade to 4G. If they do not receive an SMS, they can visit Airtel 4G SIM swap webpage and apply for the SIM card. The company claims that the new SIM card will be delivered to the address of the applicant in about 4 hours.

Once the new SIM is received, the users have to send a text message to 121 and mention the 20 digit number printed on the back of their new SIM. They will instantly receive an SMS with the settings for the new SIM and activation of their 4G service.

There are four Infinity Plans that are available to the subscribers. The basic one starts at Rs.999 and offers unlimited Airtel to Airtel calls along with 3GB of data. The other plans are – Rs.1499 with 5GB data and unlimited calls, Rs.1999 with 7GB data and unlimited calls and Rs2999 with 15GB data and unlimited calls.

Security issues with Smartwatches

Smartwatches are the latest technology trends with even players like Apple foraying into the smartwatch market. Apple Watch was launched earlier this year and Samsung Gear poses a tough challenge to Apple. Wearable from other smartphone manufacturers such as LG are already in the market. The smartwatch market is hot and is only growing exponentially. However, the rising popularity of the smartwatches also make them vulnerable to several security threats from hackers.

Smartwatches mean new doorways for hackers to access personal and professional information of the users wearing these watches. A study conducted by Hewlett-Packard has confirmed it and has proven that the security measures used by smartwatches are inadequate and they are highly prone to hacking and other security breaches.

All of these watches use TLS and SSL encryptions but many of them still use SSL v2 and can be hacked using POODLE attack. Also, these watches have poor user interface and 30 percent of them have web applications that have cloud enabled interface. This means that they can be attacked using account harvesting methods and hackers can make unlimited attempts to guess the passwords. Another major security issue is that 30 percent of these watches do not have two factor authentication and do not get locked even after 5 failed login attempts.

70 percent of these smartwatches do not receive timely firmware updates and that makes them vulnerable to hacking attacks. Apart from regular username and password information and other confidential data, smartwatches store even very personal user data such as health records and heart pulse rate. With the easy manner in which they can be hacked, means that these are vulnerable to several security threats and even the most basic of the data of the individuals are prone to risks of being compromised by hackers who can gain easy access to such information.

Emails and passwords of Baltimore Police hacked by Anonymous

Hacktivists group Anonymous claims to have published the email ids. and passwords of the Police officers of Baltimore city police. The death of Freddie Gray in the police custody led to the online campaign of Anonymous which they call OpBaltimore. As a part of this campaign, they posted the email addresses and the passwords for the email accounts of 7 Baltimore police officers and one city official of Baltimore.

However, none of these login ids and passwords are functional, maybe either because the police department changed the passwords or because the login credentials are not correct. The 7 officials whose emails login ids and passwords were posted, 6 are current officials and one is a former employee of the police department. The other 6 police officials include commanders of the police department and one is a Deputy Crime Laboratory Quality Officer. The one official who is not with the police department anymore, Joseph Johnson, now works in the pharmaceutical industry.

Two Anonymous groups, HagashTeam and AnonymousGlobo and the Baltimore Police Department were contacted by various newspapers and website for details, but so far they have not responded. It is however not sure that whether the details posted were genuine or a hoax. It is relatively easy to find the details of these police officials from various social media websites like Facebook and LinkedIn. The format for the email addresses used by the Baltimore police department is firstname.lastname@baltimorepolice.org. It is therefore relatively easy to get the email addresses.

Previously on 28th April, Anonymous claimed that they hacked the website of Baltimore Police department and attacked them with a Denial of Service Attack. However, the website became functional soon. The group had earlier posted on Pastebin a list of email ids which they claimed belonged to Baltimore Police department as well.

$ 5 Million stolen from Chinese bank account

A gang of Chinese hackers stole $5 million from a Chinese bank account of Ryanair by using electronic fund transfer. The hackers were successful in using the method of electronic fund transfer in a fraudulent manner and stole the money which is equivalent to £ 3.25 million.

The hack is suspected to have been taken place last week and not much is known about how it took place. According to ‘The Irish Times’, which in a report stated that it was done by a group of Chinese hackers. It was further reported that the account is used by Ryanair to make payments for fuel their fleet of over 400 aircraft. Therefore, when the transfer of the funds took place, it was assumed by the airlines officials that the transfer was made to buy fuels and hence it went undetected for a while, since the airlines officials did not suspect anything unusual.

It is still not clear whether the airlines used there Chinese bank account for making payments for fuels regularly but the hackers were able to gain access to the funds using a Chinese bank account. Run by Michael O’Leary, Ryanair is a low cost Dublin airline. The scam was detected by the airline last Friday and they have requested the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) in Dublin for their help in recovering their stolen funds.

The news of the hack was confirmed by Ryanair on Tuesday but it refused to divulge any further details since the matter is now under legal investigation. However, the airline confirmed that they have put measures in place to avoid any such instances from reoccurring In future. The airline in a statement said that they are working with the relevant authorities and their bank and that the funds which are just under $ 5 million have been frozen. They are expecting repayment of these funds shortly and that they will take necessary steps to avoid such instances in future.

Russian hackers found Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows and Adobe Flash

Exploiting the vulnerabilities of Microsoft Windows and Adobe Flash, a Russian hacking group which calls itself APT28 has been hacking into the computer systems of various governmental establishments which include military as well as other government organisations.

In a report published by FireEye in October, the group has been attempting to gain access to security and military establishments’ computer systems which include even the United States military. This is done with the intent of helping the Russian government gain strategic advantage. FireEye is a United States based security firm.

APT28 has detected vulnerabilities in Windows and Flash and this is being used to target the computer systems over the world. A patch to fix the vulnerabilities in Flash has already been released by Adobe and Microsoft is working on a patch to fix the issue. Flash is the most commonly used application to view animations and other web design graphics in the browsers and the internet and Windows is the widest used computer operating system.

The vulnerability in Windows is relatively difficult to exploit since it requires a high speed processor to execute the hack, however, a vulnerability still exists none the less. The increase in the attacks on the computer systems reveal a highly worrisome trend where even the most sophisticated and high tech computer systems of even security establishments around the world are being hacked and exploited. There is a growing concern in the cyber security communities due to such instances.

A growing need to strengthen the security systems is being felt round the globe and the governments are now taking such threats even more seriously.  Several hackers act alone or in groups and in certain instances, these groups are backed by the various governments like in case of APT28, it is allegedly supported by the Russian government in a covert manner.

jewish newspaper website hacked by hackers

Website of ‘The Jewish Press’, a pro Israel newspaper was hacked by a group which goes by the name Gaza Hacker Team. Gaza Hacker Team supports Palestine and has hacked the website of the Jewish newspaper and replaced its contents with anti Israel material.

They posted a picture of a man sitting on a horse holding a black flag which looks similar to an ISIS flag.

An Arabic chant continuously plays in the background and there are Arabic words in green and red colours posted on the website. The text on the hacked website warns Israel and threatens to destroy the country. Cyber Security expert Paul Goldenberg specifies that such attacks are serious in nature and expose the vulnerabilities of such websites. He also warns about more such attacks against the Jewish community and Israel in the future.

Goldenberg cofounded Secure Community Network (SCN) in 2004 which is a nonprofit organisation and was established to provide security to Jewish organisations in the United States. The group so far has countered cyber attacks from several non-state actors as well as state actors such pro-Palestinian, pro-ISIS groups, countries like Iran and Pakistan.

According to him such cyber attacks are extremely serious in nature since they grossly affect the security of the information as well as individuals. Compromising of such important and classified data such as information about individuals and other institutions pose a severe security challenge to the individuals as well as institutions. It also negatively affects the reputation and the credibility of the organisations whose website is being hacked and the data is compromised.

Cyber attacks are becoming even more threatening day by day. These pose some serious threats to even major countries, their defence and governmental establishments all around the world. It is therefore critical to counter such threats in time.

United States Military is ready to hire as cyber security specialist

Lt. General Edward C. Cardon, the head of ARCYBER, the United States Army’s cyber command wing has stated that the United States Military is planning to recruit civilian cyber security specialists for securing the military servers from cyber attacks which are exponentially increasing and pose a threat to the country’s defence computer systems and servers.

The announcement from Cardon further mentioned calling the new cyber security wing as Cyber Branch 17. This will launch a new career option for civilians who will get an opportunity to work with the United States Military. According to Cardon, it is important that the military must manage the recruitment process by making it more efficient in order to attract and retain new talent from the civilian space.

Currently most of the cyber security personnel are employed from within the army and recruitment process from among the civilians is very slow and inefficient. This severely affects the management of cyber security parameters since the military does not have the required talent and this further result in greater threats to the cyber security.

Cardon has highlighted that rather than recruiting from within the army and preserving the talent, it is more suited and efficient to hire civil cyber security experts. There are existing recruitment programs run by the National Security Agency (NSA), National Science Foundation and Office of Personnel Management.

Cardon stated that the military can make effective use of these existing frameworks to attract and retain good talent from among the civilians. It includes hiring them at decent salary and retention and relocation bonus options which will help these civilians to close their student loans without any hassles. These initiatives are necessary since the attacks in the cyber space have become more intensive and pose serious threats to the security and defence systems of major countries all over the world.

Intimate images of Charlotte McKinney leaked online

Intimate images and selfies taken by supermodel Charlotte McKinney have been leaked online by hackers. These images are being shared over social media networks and Imgur photo sharing websites after they were leaked by hackers. The images include some very intimate images of the supermodel and even her explicit and naked images.

Charlotte McKinney became famous instantly after she was profiled in Esquire and selected Instagram to be her portfolio managers. She has a semblance with Kate Upton and her advertisement for All Natural Burger made her instantly successful. Charlotte will be a part of the 20th Season of Dancing with the Stars which is a very popular reality show in the United States of America.

Despite the claims that the images were leaked by hackers, there has been no verification of this fact. According to the critics, the leak has to do with her upcoming movie release Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser. However, the alleged leaks are doing the rounds over the internet and are being shared over several websites.

Leaking intimate and personal images of celebrities has been a nemesis for some time now. Late last year, images of several celebrities include Jennifer Garner were leaked online by hackers who hacked into their iCloud accounts. There was a great debate over the security of Cloud networks such as iCloud.

Due to these incidents, cyber security experts have been pointing out the vulnerabilities of such sharing platforms and state that these are unsafe to upload personal and confidential information. With cloud computing being the next big thing, it is important to ensure that not just the data is kept safe on the internet, it is also protected from unauthorised access like those by hackers.

Pope Targeted by Turkish Hackers

Following Pope Francis’s statements referring to the mass killings by Turks of Armenians as ‘Genocide’, Turkish hackers targeted the Vatican City’s official website in protest against these comments by Pope. The Vatican website www.vatican.va was brought down on the evening of 13th April by a Turkish hacker who goes by the name @THTHerakles and it said that the attacks would continue and the website shall remain offline unless the Pope issues an official apology.

According to this hacker, the comments by the Pope are not acceptable and do not suit the stature of a highly respectable religious figure like Pope. According to him, Pope, due to his religious stature must avoid making such biased comments and the facts about the ‘Armenian Genocide’ are baseless and are false allegations. Despite the claim from the hacker that the website will be kept offline, it was back online within a few hours.
