Hackers of iPhone awarded $1 Million Bounty

Apple has been claiming that its iOS9 cannot be breached. However, this claim has been rendered futile by a group of unknown hackers. Acting on a bounty offer from Zerodium, these hackers could successfully jailbreak iOS9.1 and iOS9.2b devices.

The actually challenge was much tougher than simply jailbreaking the Apple devices. Zerodium is a security firm that works with several government agencies. It offered the bounty of $1 million to those who can jailbreak iOS powered devices and the findings will be kept secret for the use of only these government agencies. These will not be released to the public and the name of the hacking group is kept a secret.

Zerodium is still evaluating the jailbreaking exploit. As a part of the attack criteria, it was essential that the jailbreaking needs to be done in a remote manner using browsers such as Safari or Chrome and through messaging services. It means that it is not a single exploit and required multiple exploits or a chain of exploits to jailbreak Apple devices with iOS9.x.

After the large bounty was announced, various teams tried to work on the vulnerability but only one could succeed. Companies like Google announce their own bounties to white hack hackers who can reveal their vulnerabilities so that these companies could patch them. Apple does not follow this practice and instead claims to be highly secure. Apple is not completely incorrect either.

The jailbreaking instance of iOS9.x is the first in last one year since the exploit of iOS7 and it took the announcement of a bounty of $1 million for someone to succeed at jailbreaking iOS9.x. It shows that Apple devices are actually quite secure. Even the government agencies have complained about the inability to breach the encryption of iOS9.x devices. It seems Zerodium might have found an answer for them.

Data of 1,827 Vodafone customers stolen by hackers

Vodafone in the United Kingdom has revealed the fact that information of its 1,827 customers were stolen. The information included the names, bank account numbers, bank sort codes and mobile numbers of these customers. However, despite the revelation, Vodafone has refused to accept the fact that its own systems were compromised and the data was stolen. Instead it claims that the information of these 1827 customers was leaked from an “external” source.

Vodafone has not clarified what does it mean by an external source or which is this source. It also did not clarify how this external source got the information that it leaked. It seems that the information must have been leaked by someone inside Vodafone to this external source which was then released by it. There does not seem to be any other plausible explanation as to how can an external source got hold of information stored wit Vodafone.

Vodafone in Australia has recently been accused of monitoring the call and SMS details of a reporter in an unauthorised manner. Even in that instance the company pinned the blame on one of its staff rather than taking the responsibility on itself for the incident. It seems that even in this hacking instance of over 1800 customers’ data being stolen, Vodafone is again trying to find someone else to blame.

After the TalkTalk incident in the UK where thousands of customers had their banking details compromised and over 1.2 million had their name and email ids leaked, Vodafone is the next instance that has shocked the industry and the consumers. It seems even companies as large as Vodafone and TalkTalk are complacent when it comes to securing the information of their customers and the access to these customer details can be gained by anyone without proper authorisation.

A 15 year old boy arrested for hacking TalkTalk

Scotland Yard has arrested a 15 year old boy in the Northern Ireland in connection with the hacking incident that breached the information stored with TalkTalk a United Kingdom based broadband and phone service provider.

The company has over 4 million customers across the United Kingdom and the attack on their website resulted in the breach of sensitive information of their customers. Consequent of the attack, the metropolitan police raided a house in Antrim County and arrested the boy on the suspicion of conducting the hack. He is charged for the offenses covered under the Computer Misuse Act.

The attack initially was considered grave and the company lost its market share value by 12 percent. However, later Dido Harding, the CEO of the company stated that the attack was not of very serious nature. Earlier it was thought that sensitive information such as the banking details of the customers could have been lost in the attack. But later it was found by the company that even if the data was last, it was only partial and did not comprise much of the information. For instance, the credit card data if stolen, would have XXXX instead of the numbers which means that this information is meaningless for stealing funds.

The boy is under the custody of the Police of Northern Ireland and is being investigated. There is ongoing inquiry into the incident and the premises from where the boy was arrested is continued being searched.

The investigation is conducted jointly by the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit (MPCCU) and Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Such attacks are of serious nature and the companies can potentially lose billions in damages caused due to the breach of the data of their customers.

Sony to pay US$8million for the hacked data

Sony had plans to release its movie “The Interview” showing the assassination of Kim Jong Un, the North Korean Leader. However, Sony was never able to release the movie officially as the computers of Sony were hacked into by the attackers who were protesting against the release of the movie.

These hackers accessed the database of the company and leaked pirated version of the movie. They also leaked sensitive personal information of the employees of Sony and posted them online.

The leaked data contained personal information of the employees resulting in employees filing a legal suit against the company claiming that they have faced financial losses due to the leak of their personal information. The employees are scared that their leaked personal information can be misused and accordingly they have stepped up their personal credit monitoring.

The United States investigators believed that the hack was conducted by North Korean hackers, however a group that calls itself “Guardians of Peace” has claimed the responsibility of the attack on the computers at Sony.

North Korean government has denied the reports that the hackers were backed by the government. But, it is important to note that before the actual hack, the North Korean officials had warned Sony against the release of the movie by calling it a terrorist activity and if the movie is released the company will have to face serious repercussions.

Due to the hacking incident, Sony has to pay US$8 million as the settlement amount. The settlement amount includes $2.5 million to be paid to the employees, both current and former whose information was leaked. The amount paid to individual employees is US$10,000. Apart from that the company has to shell out US$2 million for protecting its employees from credit faults with an amount of US$1,000 for each employee. US$3.5 million will be paid for the legal fees that the company has incurred due to the lawsuit.

Emails of CIA Director posted online by WikiLeaks

The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks has in its latest exploits posted personal details of the CIA Director John Brennan. The personal details include Brennan’s residential address, social security number of his wife, his personal health history and other sensitive and personal information. The information was leaked after the emails of Brennan were hacked.

The hack was done by an American hacker who hacked into the accounts of John Brennan and Jen Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security. The unknown hacker hacked information includes details of Brennan even before he was a part of the current Barrack Obama administration. Among the official information accessed from the emails were Brennan’s employment application form and drafts of intelligence reports.

The hacked emails belonged to the personal email account of Brennan and although they included information about intelligence reports, projects and details of his company “The Analysis Corp.”, not much of the leaked information has anything sensitive or top secret. The employment form found in the hacked emails belonged to the application for the National Security Position. It is a lengthy form with 48 pages and was filled by Brennan in November 2008, almost 4 years before he was actually appointed as the CIA Director.

This act by WikiLeaks has been termed as criminal by the CIA. They have strongly opposed this action and the CIA along with the FBI are investigating the matter. WikiLeaks is popular after it posted a large volume of governmental documents that were leaked by Edward Snowden. Snowden has since feared for his life and is living in a temporary asylum in Russia from 2012.

Several government officials in the US have been targeted by hackers and it seems that not even the Director of CIA is immune to such attacks!

Anonymous Says It’s World War 3 Are They Sure ? | Anonymous | World War 3 |

In a video posted on YouTube by the hacktivist group Anonymous, it’s been said that the current global geo-political turmoil is nothing else but World War 3. Anonymous might have nailed it and their arguments sound logical.

Anonymous has made several claims in its video and has backed it with evidences such as interviews of former top officials and other scientific facts that cannot be simply ignored. The hactivist group has said that there are major political powers behind the origin of instabilities in many parts of the world and especially in the Middle-East.

The video shows an interview of Hilary Clinton stating how the US governments have in the past funded rebels in countries like Afghanistan. These rebels then turned into jihadists and attacked USA and American forces. Taliban is an example of this where the US governments supported the rebels against the former USSR. United States wanted to control the Middle-East and South-East Asia and at the peak of Cold War in the 80s, it was the focal point of the government to reduce the influence of the USSR in this region and exert its own control.

But, soon after these rebels supported by the US turned their weapons (given to them by the US government) on to their former masters. The attack on the twin towers on 9/11 is an example. But the video also claims the validity of the attack. According to one conspiracy theory stated in the video, it has doubted the claim that the burning jet fuel of the planes hitting the twin towers melted the steel body of the buildings. The video claims that the heating point of jet fuel is much lower than the melting point of the steel.

There are various conspiracy theories doing the round. But one fact cannot be denied is that the disturbance caused by groups like Taliban and ISIS and the problems between countries such as Russia-Ukraine, Iran-Iraq, Israel-Palestine and other countries could be flashpoints of a larger global war – World War 3.
