How to stop WhatsApp to share Mobile Number with Facebook

It’s been around more than two years that Facebook has officially acquired Whatsapp to expand the digital marketing landscape. Despite Whatsapp CEO Jan Koum said that user privacy wouldn’t suffer, the services are about to get a little bit friendlier with their data sharing.

Whatsapp has changed its privacy policy; in its new privacy policy it gives permission to share data, including your phone number, with Facebook. In an FAQ, WhatsApp says it is doing this to:

More accurately count unique users.
Better fights spam and abuse.
Show better friend suggestions and more relevant ads to you on Facebook.

In a blog post, Whatsapp stated the reason behind this data sharing that highlights its plan to test the ways to communicate with businesses.

“Whether it’s hearing from your bank about a potential fraudulent transaction, or getting notified by an airline about a delayed flight, many of us get this information elsewhere, including in text messages and phone calls. We want to test these features in the next several months”.

What can be done to avoid this sharing of information between Whatsapp and Facebook?

There are two ways to opt out the sharing your account information with Facebook for targeting purposes.

Method 1:

On WhatsApp, don’t click Agree when it asks you to confirm you are happy with the change of terms. Instead, click read more. You should then see a check box or control button at the bottom of the screen which says “Share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook to improve my Facebook ads and product experiences”, Uncheck this.

Method 2:

If you have already agreed to the updated terms, you can go to to Settings > Account > Share my account info in the app. Then uncheck the box or toggle the control. But quick, WhatsApp says you only have 30 days to make this choice after agreeing to the new terms.

It seems that you can’t completely opt out this, as Whatsapp says that your information is sent to Facebook for other purposes such as improving infrastructure and delivery systems, understanding how its services are being used, securing systems, and fighting spam, abuse, or infringement activities.

So, it’s clear that somehow few of your information are accessible to the Facebook in a secure and reliable way. The only way to avoid this information sharing is to avoid the use of Whatsapp.

Facebook Hack: How To Modify Chats

As we all are familiar with the popular social networking site Facebook, which is used by millions of people around the world every day. People share their pictures, send messages and share different things on their profile with their friends and families.

How to Hack Facebook? Is the highly searched expression on Google, we have discussed this before as well in our “Facebook Hacking Course”. Everyone is seeking to somehow take control to other’s social profile and their privacy by reading the chats and other stuffs.

The Researchers at Check Point Software Technologies have recently found vulnerability related to the Facebook chat that we have on our online account and mobile app as well. Researchers have stated that attackers now can modify the Facebook chat of the user. Not only can modify but also can send messages and easily can delete as well so that no one trace that what happened from his profile.

This recent vulnerability also allows an attacker to send malicious malware through chat without any trouble.

For modifying the chat, the main thing is to get the user chat ID. Which is given by the Facebook server to every user, and which is unique for all. To get the Facebook chat ID, all you required is the basic HTML knowledge:

1. Send legitimate message to someone. Example “Hi”
2. Right click into the chat and view Page Source and search for message “Hi”
3. Then search for the “message id” parameter from that block that contains the unique Id for the chat.
4. Once the Id is fetched then uses this Id to get access to the chat by using “Burp Suite” Toolkit.

Complete Video demonstration is given below:

This vulnerability can be used for many purposes. The Check Point team has already reported this vulnerability to the Facebook, and will be patched soon by the Facebook security team. So, users won’t have to worry about this vulnerability any more as Facebook is highly concerned and dedicated towards its user’s privacy and security.

Attackers are working hard on finding Facebook vulnerabilities, so we may encounter these types of vulnerabilities in future as well. The most appropriate way to protect Facebook chat is to adopt End-to-End encryption, so that an attacker won’t read the actual chat, if he somehow gets the chat.

He noticed the CSS of Facebook requires a .PNG file named: aeO1ik7i7-T.png

How to use this 'dislike' icon on your website/blog?

Example:
  • HEX Code:
  • Escape Code:

Or you can simply 'copy/paste' this icon ""

Finally Facebook  is Working On Dislike Button said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Now facebook has change its mind. On Tuesday, during the session of Q&A at Company HQ Mark Zuckerberg unveiled that they are working on "Dislike" Button

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years,” Zuckerberg said. “Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it.”

"People have asked about the 'dislike' button for many years," Mr Zuckerberg told the audience on Tuesday.
"Probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it."

What users really want is the ability to express empathy,” Not every moment is a good moment.”

Facebook has long shied away from building a “Dislike” button over concerns it would invite rampant negativity. “That isn’t what we’re here to build in the world,” Zuckerberg said.

Malware that can hack Facebook accounts infected over one million users(facebook hacking)

Over one million users were affected by malware that hacked into the Facebook accounts of these users. The malware was a part of two gaming applications and hence the spread reached over a million since these were relatively popular gaming applications.

These games are ‘Cowboy Adventure’ and ‘Jump Chess’. The malware is a Trojan named Android/Spy.Feabme.A and it collected the login ids and passwords of the users who installed it.

These two applications were used to get the Facebook login credentials of the users and the malware could collect details of around a million accounts before it was detected.

The apps contained malware codes in a subtle way. It means that the gaming applications functioned normally and the users could actually enjoyed playing the game unaware of the fact that the applications contained malware.

The malware used a phishing mechanism to get the user details. It will open a fake Facebook screen asking users to enter their login details. The applications did not ask for account details at the time of installation and hence users would not suspect any malware activity. However, since it would open a face Facebook page, users would login in their details and would get an error that they are unable to login.

However, the details would get captured by the malware embedded in the application which would then be used to log into user accounts. The spread of malware was more than anything similar that has happened before. The applications could successfully get the approval from Google for getting published on Google Play Store.

Since the malware has been detected, the apps have been removed from the play store; however it was done only after affecting around a million Facebook accounts. Also, if someone tries to install these apps from some other store, Google issues a warning to them communicating about the malware in the application.

Facebook Is Working On More Security Features Tied Up With Kaspersky To Secure Your Account

Facebook Is Working On More Security features Tied Up With Kaspersky To Secure Your Account.

Many of the Facebook users are targeted by Phisher attacks and intellectual activities, now Kaspersky Lab is ready to protect your Facebook account.

Facebook security engineer Trevor Pottinger said, “Thanks to the collaboration with these companies, in the past three months we have helped clean up more than two million people’s computers that we detected were infected with malware when they connected to Facebook,”

“In these cases, we present a cleanup tool that runs in the background while you continue using Facebook, and you get a notification when the scan is done to show you what it found.”

Pottinger said the program uses “a combination of signals to help find infections and get the malware off of your computer for good, even if the malware isn’t actively spreading spam or harmful links.”

Kaspersky Lab’s Kate Kochetkova said in blog post that Facebook users are often targeted in online fraud schemes such as “phishing,” which are faked emails designed to get recipients to download malware.

“Facebook is a major aim for phishers: one in five phishing scams targets Facebook notifications. So be vigilant when you receive emails appearing to be from Facebook: as they can be fake. There are lots of Trojans targeting Facebook users as well,” she said.

"If the Facebook team has detected suspicious behavior from your account and it looks as though it might be infected, the social network will suggest you scan your device for security issues. Upon logging in, you will see a warning page like this, offering the security scan."

Security Researchers from India, Egypt,U.S and U.K benefited most from Facebook Bug Bounty Program

The social networking giant has paid around $1.3M in 2014 as part of its bug bounty program. Even though the numbers are down from the year 2013 when the company paid around $1.5M in rewards to different security researchers. The average reward of bounties in year 2014 according to the Facebook is $1,788.

The concept of the program was to encourage the white hat hackers to find the vulnerabilities in the social networking site so the company can fix it before some blackhat takes advantage of that vulnerability. The total number of countries who are reporting the bugs on social networking giant is 123. Top 5 countries by volume whose researchers came forward and report the vulnerabilities on the social networking site include India, Egypt, U.S, U.K and Philippines.

 India

With around total number of 196 bugs Indian security researchers tops the list just like in 2013. Indian researchers collected the average prize money of around $1,343.

Egypt

Surprisingly the second country by Volume of bugs reported to the Facebook is Egypt. Egypt security researchers reported around 81 bugs which is a far lesser number when you compare them with the Indian researchers. The average prize money that Egyptian security researchers collected is around $ 1,220.

 U.S

The third on the list is United States who researchers earned around the average of $2,470 from the 61 bugs that they reported.

U.K

The security researchers from U.K also took full advantage of this bug bounty program by Facebook and reported 28 Bugs and earned the most averaged money from all countries $2,768. It is clear that Facebook bounty program benefited the most to U.K security researchers who collected the biggest sums of prize money.

Philippines

The fifth on the top 5 list is Philippines from where around 27 bugs are reported and the average award that Philippines security researchers collected is $1,093.

Facebook thinks they are going towards the right direction with this security strategy. Already around 100 new bugs are reported and fixed by the social networking sites this year.  Another positive point is this that the researchers are now finding bigger and better bugs that before. Which keeps making Facebook more secure than ever.

Facebook rewards researcher $12,500 for reporting its biggest vulnerability

Facebook has fixed its biggest security flaw in just two hours when it came to light that how a hacker could use the site's vulnerability to delete every photo on the social networking site.

There are more than 500 million photos are on Facebook according to the report from 2014. Facebook team responded to this vulnerability very quickly because of its uniqueness.

Laxman Muthiyah a security researcher said on his blog that "Any photo album owned by an user or a page or a group could be deleted."

He found the bug while he was poking poking around in Facebook's Graph API, a developer platform that allows websites and applications to tap into Facebook's data.

One user cannot delete the other user's photos by using Graph API but by directing an token from his smartphone the user can assure Facebook that the problem that the other users album belongs to him. Then he will completely access it and even delete the albums if he want.

The bug that was reported was so serious that the Facebook security team fixes it in just 2 hours and then announced the reward of $12,500 to the Muthiyah who reported it in the first place.

The bug came into light just a day after the Facebook announces its ThreatExchange program, to help its defense against the CyberCrimes.

110,000 facebook accounts infected with malware within 48 hours

An unidentified Malware is spreading strongly on the Facebook.Just within 48 hours the malware infected 110,000 Facebook accounts.Facebook and other security researchers are working on the malware. When Facebook users gets infected by this malware it automatically update status with a malicious link and tag less than 20 person in the status. When users click on the infected link an adult video played automatically then the video is stopped suddenly and forced the users to install fake flash player(malware). The malware uses goo.gl  shorter url to hide the real malicious link, unlike recent social networking malwares this malware uses technique called "magnet" which is posting malicious link publicly rather then sending to it in private messages. So far the malware is publicly spreading that's why it is more visible than the previous Facebook malwares…

Facebook to offer users more control on ads

SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook said it would begin allowing users more information about the ads delivered to them, and to block marketing messages they don't want to see.
In a blog post, Facebook said its users "tell us they want more control over the ads they see" and that the huge social network is responding to that.
"That's why we're introducing ad preferences, a new tool accessible from every ad on Facebook that explains why you're seeing a specific ad and lets you add and remove interests that we use to show you ads," the post said.
The option will be available in the United States in the next few weeks, "and we are working hard to expand globally in the coming months," the statement said.
As an example, Facebook said, "if you're not interested in electronics, you can remove electronics from your ad interests."
At the same time, Facebook noted that it would draw from users Web browsing activities -- and not just from Facebook -- in an effort to target ads for specific users.
"Today, we learn about your interests primarily from the things you do on Facebook, such as pages you like," the blog post said.
"Starting soon in the US, we will also include information from some of the websites and apps you use. This is a type of interest-based advertising, and many companies already do this."
Facebook will also allow users to opt out of this targeted advertising.
"If you don't want us to use the websites and apps you use to show you more relevant ads, we won't," Facebook said.
Jules Polonetsky, executive director at the Future of Privacy Forum in Washington, said Facebook is expanding how it uses targeted ads while at the same time adding controls.
"It's a big step forward in giving users more control over advertising," Polonetsky told AFP.
"This new ad preference manager definitely goes beyond what is in the market and will likely spur other companies to do the same. It's clearly positive to show people what's going on behind the scenes and the key part is to let people out if they are not interested."
But Bradley Shear, an attorney specializing in social media and privacy, said the Facebook action raised concerns because it effectively shares browsing history with advertisers.
"Facebook uses the data you post and gleaned from your digital activity (posts, messages, and now websites visited, etc...) to make money," Shear said in a blog post.
"I don't advise anyone who values their privacy to post personal information to Facebook because it has an abysmal record when it comes to protecting user privacy."
