Subnormality–The Webcomic that demands your reading.

Its feels like aeons since I have written anything at Prohack. Actually, I got busy with my side projects, job & some pretty shitty sticky situations (I am looking at your CitiBank) .

Life was crawling ahead & first time in my life I truly felt helpless against the greater powers acting, but that’s an another story for some other time. Life at Orange has been good, has technology , scenarios & responsibilities that actually empower you. So far so good, lets see how it goes ahead.

Nevertheless, its not my life I have come to discuss today here, its something about a webcomic I read too much. I have always been a fan of webcomics, be it the all time classic "User Friendly" or the new ones (well they are fairly old by internet standards but still..) xkcd,The Oatmeal , Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal , Penny Arcade , Cyanide & Happiness , Awkward Zombie , Brawl in the Family ,Hijinks Ensue , Dualing Analogs , Dinosaur Comics , JL8 & some pretty cool others (read:too tired to type); they have been a part & parcel of my life since the time I became a netizen.

Be it sublime humour, philosophy , video games or just anything, I believe web comics as a medium ace anything contemporary. Then in & around ~2008 I came across Subnormality, A comic within the umbrella of Viruscomix which are described as "Comix with too many words since 2007" by author Winston Rowntree, & I was blown away by its content. I was instantly hooked & 5 years later, I am a fan.

It has been satirical, practical , intricately detailed , heart-warming , absurd, carefully drawn, full of easter eggs & pop culture references & caters to a very specific audience who have the patience to handle ~1500 - 2000 word texts inside speech bubbles just for the sake of reading a webcomic. But once you see through the veil, trust me, its one hell of a gem that demands a reading.

Just in case its not your cup of tea, you can go through Abnormality which I believe is a fork of Subnormality created to cater Cracked.com & is equally good.

Also, Winston's other comix at Viruscomix are “Sector 41” (a nod to Akademgorodok/Zheleznogorsk), "Things they Dont tell you (but should)" which are a must read.

Just in case you want to test the waters before getting addicted to awesome webcomics by Winston Rowntree, you can read

  1. Monstrous Discrepancies
  2. Understanding Nuclear Weapons
  3. Seven Reasons
  4. The Closer you get
  5. Video Game Design
  6. Logo Design primer
  7. The Stupid Planet

for a start. Meanwhile, I am reading Zanadu again.. :)

Happy New Year 2013 – Best Wishes from Prohack

2012 was a formidable year : ] I was busy, in fact I have never been busier in my life and I find myself guilty of going into hibernation multiple times even when I didn’t wanted to. I promise 2013 will be the year of change , and I would dedicate myself over some newer interests and projects, this time, open source ones. I had enough of closed source pentest and scouting, nevertheless, It was an year where I -

  • Completed multiple targets at corp level. [4]
  • Ran IOU on my laptop and simulated complete corporate cloud over it.
  • Learnt and explored more about networks.
  • Brokeup with my girlfriend : P
  • and at last , resigned from Tulip Telecom to join Orange Business Services, a subsidiary of France Telecom. In fact I will be joining in early Jan 2013.

I hope Orange will be my home away from home and will open symbiotic and never before possible opportunities for me, and I am quite excited about it. I hope I will be able to take more time for my projects and share with you some exciting findings. When i look back at 2012, it was an year that taught me a lot of things, it was full of surprises and I hope 2013 will be an awesome year for all of us.

See you next mission and Stay Awesome .

Happy New Year 2013

Increasing Reliance Netconnect speed, Online Transaction failure and Customer Care woes

Since my data card limit was over, so i got Reliance Netconnect from a colleague, thought it might come handy while posting “IP Subnetting - The easy way” at Prohack and some simple surfing, Reliance Datacards suck :|I was already skeptic of taking the data card actually as I previously had a very bad experience with Reliance Netconnect  and doubted if their broadband services are any good. I bet my MTS Mblaze makes it eat dirt any day ,but I had no option at that moment and thought , lets give the fucker another chance.

Ah well..you can say it was more than bad. Firstly, the data card has pretty bad speeds (~30 KBps) and then connection dropping issues. Mind you, I live in Delhi NCR and get full signal bars all the time on Reliance Netconnect Broadband + but still it barely managed to load Facebook. I thought, why not to change the DNS, on experimenting, I found Open DNS and Verizon DNS to be the most stable of all and I got a speed boost of 90-100 KBps : ]]

Here is how you can Increase speed of Reliance Netconnect Broadband + datacard -

Plugin your data card, launch application, go to settings, click on edit.

Reliance netconnect increase speed - prohack

Click on advanced and put DNS server IPs. I found Verizon 4.2.2.2 //4.2.2.1 and Open DNS  208.67.222.222 // 208.67.220.220 work best for me. You can also try Google DNS 8.8.8.8 // 8.8.4.4 . Experiment and pick your choice.

Increase speed of Reliance Netconnect - DNS settings

Once done, click OK, save it and connect. you will get improved speeds..The whole process makes me wonder why Reliance’s default DNS is so slow . Do they even use their datacards at their home ? :|

On to my story, Since, even after changing DNS, the speeds were not good enough for me, so I thought, why not to recharge my MTS Data card online and then use it.  Instantly I opened MTS website and after entering required details, transferring money to MTS from my online account, the page hanged and session was timed out. Responding to my sense of deja vu, I checked the data card and found it was not sending/receiving any data. the fucker dropped the connection just I when i was about to get my transaction completed.

I guess it took its revenge :X

I immediately emailed to MTS customer care/RechargeItNow/Bank customer care and I have *yet* to receive a helpful followup message on email. I contacted MTS customer care on phone and entered 1,1,1,1,,1 waited for 2 minutes 46 seconds (yeah..i timed it) , the automated IVR said “after several tries you have not entered any number, so we are transferring your call to our expert” . Well..it wasn't my fault, again, there is some fault in their system as I tried 3 different valid MDN numbers later on and I got the same result. Nevertheless, I was put on call with an *expert* to whom I explained my issue and asked for escalation matrix, the details of email ID and in simple words, “what to do in case of transaction failure, the MTS way ? ”

The result was flabbergasting, the CCE spoke in an english which by all means was incomprehensible to me, I politely disconnected the call and then fumed for 2-3 minutes while looking at the Reliance datacard.

Protip : If you  hate someone, gift him a Reliance datacard and watch him cry tears of blood :P

In the meantime i am still waiting for a positive response from my bank/MTS/rechargeitnow.

That was last night and I guess i have been outsmarted by a pathetic Reliance Netconnect.

Happy New Year 2012

Okay folks :) Its that time of the year again when you can get high (me on red bull) and celebrate like there is no tomorrow (literally..2012 anyone ? ). Happy New Year everyone..I have taken a lot of resolutions for 2012, and I will make them true .. that's one more resolution for me.
Happy New year 2012 from Prohack
As a roundup of 2011, I got hired at Tulip Telecom and now oversee the good, the bad and the nerdy side of security there along with network operations, ranted about the current security scene, wrote about Top Indian Hackers,  I got my HTC wildfire (rooted and still kicking ass), got myself a new laptop , got interested into networking, hacked routers and did a lot of research on exotic fields if you have been following the Prohack FB page lately. I am sorry for absence of posts though, which can be attributed to  me getting busy on a lot of side projects and on my Job. One of resolutions for 2012 includes giving more time to Prohack and I will see it through Winking smile .
Nevertheless, stay awesome ! and Have a safe, sane and awesome 2012 .

Diwali Celebrations and Answers to common questions (which people have been asking me)

First of all..Happy Diwali to everyone :) The festival of light , may it brings the best out of you .
Happy Diwali Everyone :)

In the mean time, there have been a lot of commotion going behind the scenes .. lots of emails asking whether I have gone into some kind of digital hibernation .. So, I will be answering the most common questions here ..

Question : What are you doing these days ?
Answer   : Networks..Networks..Networks..and lots of exotic research on some exotic devices..plus some thing related to android, android service codes, gns, cisco, juniper and random stuff about explosives.

Question : Explosives ?
Answer   : No typo :) i am into it actually for quite a long time. Home made stuff rocks if you ask me. (and if you are careful)

Question : Okay..so, why no updates ?
Answer   : Call it , lack of time (dedicated internet included) .. I am sooo busy in company work that I am not able to post some wonderful findings I have dug up.

Question : Why dont you reply to mails ?
Answer   : I reply to each and every mail I get, no matter how "flabbergasting" it may seem to me and only if it gets past my "SPAM" filters.

Question : When you will be back in fulltime writing
Answer   : Cant say, I write when I am free..and I will stick to it till I get on a vacation.

Stay Amazing..

Sorry for Blog downtime - Stupid Android experiments lead to it

Hi Friends
Last night I had some stupid stupid experiments with my Android, the blogger client for it and Blogger Draft. Which led to the blog open for invitations only. In the morning I found my mistake and I am sorry for the inconvenience it caused to you.
Truely sorry for that :((

It wont happen again (and next time I am going to test apps and changes on temporary blog first. Point jotted and duly taken).

Cheers and stay gold

Dear System, Fuck You ! | Angry Hacker Rant version 1.1

Sometimes I regret that why I didn't studied in class 12. But then, I never wanted to waste my time studying good for nothing subjects which played no role in the career I chose to opt. I chose to be different and I took the beating. Period. Even today, the good for nothing competition gets selected and is well placed cuz it studied in a better college and had a better 12 percentage, damn system. How much role skill plays comes into light when you jump at the real market. And they say we don't have our own Taran King, rms, Knight Lightning, Flake, Krahmer and Jon Lech. Let me start with the dishonor I brought to my dad as I was not "bright enough" to score good in the subjects everybody excelled. Not that I wasn't bright enough, I was not fucking interested, period. Let me talk about having Singla, Prabhat and my comp teacher as being my only friends at that moment when my family itself turned my back on me cuz I never scored accordingly.. well..why don't I talk about the subjects I was pretty good at? Programming? English? Anything that was practical? Nopes.. I am talking about the whole fucking society treating me as an asshole as I was not good in competitive subjects. I cursed the God why the hell i was born in a country where the student cant choose the career himself and has to rely on unimportant factors that will crush any genuine moral left in him ? I literally swooned at the tech the US/German/Spanish hackers were playing with, the real masters of the security game, and I cried I might never be as good as them as they had the advantage of choosing their own destiny not to rely on fucking AIEEE for your interests and money making rat race. I didn't wanted to study PCM, okay, Physics is okay, but CM is not a choice for me. Prabhat liked it, now he is a genuine scientist and I appreciate that, but I like hardcore security and I don't see anything where a fucking Ethyl 2-methylbenzoate or integral calculus played any role in that unless i went postal into crypto algorithms (which at a later phase of my life , I did)  and biotech .

Alas...I never knew what went wrong.

What was my crime fuckers? Being able to digitally pwn Ur ass in circa 07?

That were the days i got a sudden revelation of some sort..screw the system.. I went into isolation. I vowed that I might be the underdog of the fucking Indian education system, but I am glad whatever I am doing, I am good at it and happy to do it with satisfaction. I wont let anything I faced to my next generation. They would have the right to be the best since their inception at their own choice and they will be the best in the field of their choice, be it soccer, rocket science, i don't care, but they will be happy. And God help you if they choose to be the hackers, you know it better.

Amen

Welcome to Version 3.0

Hi folks .. Prohack is back :)

I believe you will be pissed off as the website was experiencing a lot of ups & down recently, broken feeds, unfinished redirections, error 404, error 500 .. the list goes on.. My move on wordpress was quite shaky ( bad dns resolution, non availability of internet, exams..jesus ) & the only thing I can say as of now is that I am back to blogger, this time with quite minimalistic look, which will be updated with time (as i tweak css in my free time). Prohack has changed, yep, a lot. The new template is designed by splashytemplates & i kind of liked it. Its quite low on resources & saves my happy ass & time as of now.

Please review my website & suggest improvements, till then, welcome to Prohack ver.3.0

Back from Lucknow, Interview by Hacker5 Magazine & more

Sorry for a late update folks, I m just back from SRM CEM lucknow, where I was invited to deliver a seminar on Reverse Engineering & application cracking using custom code. Lucknow was a blast, the students there were very cooperative & I was accompanied by my best friend Prateek Singla, fellow teammates & hackers Parul Khanna, Rahul Tyagi & Mr Ajay Anand. You can see that we really had a blast there :D

The team :) - theprohack.com

The Team

The students were eager :) - theprohack.com

The Lecture

The aftermath of lecture - theprohack.com

The Aftermath

Plus, recently I was interviewed by the folks at hacker5 magazine, which is the first hacking magazine of India.I m publishing excerpts of the interview here.

Hacker5: About you ?

Me : I am a peaceful little ghost & have a passion for computer security. Please note I am not a hacker. I m more of a computer security researcher.

Hacker5: Your Rig ?

Me : Fedora 13 x86 on Intel dual core 1 GB ram. A modest machine, but customized to anything :) Want to move on to SPARC architecture for a change.

Hacker5: Your Life style ?

Me : My Lifestyle ? Waking up early in the morning to exercise, tone my body, mixing up with people, going college. The real part starts after dinner, logging into irc to roam free as a bird in freenode, watching cracktros, reading about virii at netlux heavens, reading usenet newsgroups, going through with retro files , ASMX86 & C program crunching, emulators,& reading phrack magazine & ezines through the night,..only to wake up in the morning to know that you have been late to college..when I m not messing with computers, I m into classic Halo & videogame reviews. AVGN,XKCD,Theoatmeal are a favorite.

Hacker5: How did you get into hacking ?

Me : It all started as when I didnt get into medical line..then a revelation occurred , My friend Prateek inspired me into this & i went with basic windows, learning the OS, knowing its structure, mingled with programming in C/C++. partly, I got encouragement from my lecturers who actively supported my passion. Later on I drifted to ASM & Linux (I am still getting better) & was inspired by emulators by El Semi & the Kawaks team. Debugging into ROM files, hacking N64 data roms, ppf patching in playstation & studying how programs worked in low level..that was all my life in class 12 to Btech 2nd year. I hated databases by instinct & never got good at them, but later on when i fully switched to linux (courtesy of Raghu), I came to know about the intricacies of MySQL & open source platforms..& was hooked to it till Oracle purchased SUN.
Now I m into ASM again.

Hacker5: How you have started your organization

Me : Organization ? nah..call it a fanbase, a movement. I started PROHACK with only one thing in mind, to share what I knew..the start was tough but later on, It gained momentum.

Hacker5: Family support ?

Me : Ah well..initially my family was not that supportive for my passion, but as time progressed, they cooperated & backed me up. My father is my backbone & the pillar of strength for me. I thank God for making me who i am.

Hacker5: SWISS bank hacking & politicians...provide few scandals.. ?

Me : Not interested. Call me an anti politicist

Hacker5: Hackers resources for both white hat & black hat

Me : PHRACK magazine, ezines , IRC, Usenet, newsgroups, forums, manuals of devices & programs..its all there, you only need to see through it.

Hacker5: USENET concept as only 7% data is available on Google

Me : USENET has been into scene even before Internet, & its something to experience. However, even today, its in infancy (less than 20 groups in USENET from India), you can say 90% of people don't get to know about it. internet as we see is the public network, the scary truth is that the major networks are always hidden & they are quite prominent behind the scenes.

Hacker5: SUNNY VAGEHALA truth.. who hacked Orkut

Me : Those who cant code are not hackers.

Packet monkeys?

YES.

Script kiddies?

YES .

Hackers ?

NO! .

Next question please.

Hacker5: Your views on Ethical Hacking

Me : I have problems with some folks who call them ethical hackers. There is nothing called as Ethical hacker, Hacking is an art & there is nothing unethical in doing Hacking. Ethical hacking is analogous to saying Ethical Rapist. however, Hacking is the passion to pursue anything with deepest dedication, its all about knowing computers as they are & beyond. That's why..its rightly said, there is nothing called as an Ethical Hacker..Hacking is an art & you need no ethics to pursue it. & for God's sake no body is a hacker till he can code, & till he can code with absolute efficiency...till then he might be a security liking guy, an admin, a packet monkey..but not a hacker.

Hacker5: Views on Open Source

Me : An absolute necessity nowadays..its the key to connect with developers all over the world. .its about freedom..I mean what's the point in using a tool designed by other, unless its open source ? a closed source tool is as dangerous as a virus, we just don't know what is behind its hood & what it may cause to anonymity & efficiency of a successful xpl0it. why not to get a low level knowledge of packets & protocols & write off a code to sniff it out, that may take time, but that is foolproof...it will make a good programmer out of you & you will be able to customize it to your limits

Hacker5: The Hacking Underground ?

Me : I m more of a coder...I was more interested in international scene, for the security scene in India is in the state of infancy. The scene is degenerating & its better to have a look at it while its still there <hint:IRC/USENET>. India's team technotrojans (team t3) & their disappearance from the web..I wonder where are they now, didn't knew them personally, but they spearheaded the scene at one time.

Hacker5: Views on Pakistan China Cyber attacks

Me : Ah well..as far as Indo-Pak cyber war is concerned, what i have seen is that its nothing more than defacing websites for pure revenge. Nothing more, nothing less. I highly respect Saqib Akhtar (from PCSX2 dev team) as he has been my hero for last 2 years as a driving force to get better at low level code. I believe the war is futile..why not to get better & share code..amen

Hacker5: Your Heroes ?

Me : The_ut, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Eric S Raymond, Alan Cox,Fyodor, FX of Phenoelit, Wesley McGrew, geohot, Saqib & me :)

Hacker5: Dream ?

Me : To be a speaker at Defcon, be a legend like the_ut, get money, get rich :D

Hacker5: People you wish to thank

Me : My father, Prateek, Martin, Silverbullet, RS3V3, Neha, Param & Saloni. Thanks for making me who I am today :)

Hacker5: Contact

Me : You can find me roaming in the IRC's, surfing wikipedia & ezines & dorkly/XKCD/Phrack/textarchives/preterhuman & studying snippets. Else while you can find me inside HOD's office :D or roaming into corridors of college snooping into netgears .

You can get the hacker5 magazine from here :)

will be updating you guys soon :) A very special thanks to Vaidehi Mam & Amarjit Sir for giving me a platform. greetz fly to folks at SRM.
