Apple announces a bounty of $3 million for identifying bugs in iOS 9 | IOS 9 | Iphone | Apple |

Apple has released the latest version of its coveted operating system for mobile devices iOS. The latest version of the iOS is iOS 9 and it is already being touted as the most secure and save version of the operating system that powers iPhones and iPads, the mobile devices of Apple.
Apple has introduced rootless technology in iOS 9 which makes it impossible to jailbreak the devices that run iOS 9. Since there is no root, rooting is impossible and therefore jailbreaking is also improbable.

There have been several reported incidents of bugs and malware that have affected Android and iOS users. Among the attacks faced by Apple, XcodesGhost is one of the most sophisticated and unique attacks that Apple has ever faced. The malware affects not just the Apple apps but rather its Xcodes so that it goes unnoticed. When developers use this bugged XcodesGhost to develop apps, the malicious codes get loaded into the apps. Several of such apps were uploaded on Apple App Store and affected various devices.

Jailbroken Apple devices have also been hit by several bugs. It is because of these factors Apple has made certain technological innovations in its latest version of the operating system iOS 9. Even popular jailbreakers are finding it impossible to jailbreak iOS 9. Apple has challenged anyone who can jailbreak iOS 9 with a bounty of US$3 million.

A famous hacker Tem PanGu has stated that the beta version of iOS 9 has been jailbroken and hackers are working on jailbreaking iOS 9.1. However, no official statement has been announced about the jailbreaking of iOS 9.1.

Jailbreaking iOS 9 is not impossible but very difficult. It is very complicated and would be very
expensive for anyone trying to jailbreak. A bounty of $3 million is aptly priced for such as huge challenge.

FBI arrests the hacker who was its own informant

In a bizarre incident, the FBI has arrested 70 hackers in an operation to bust a hacking forum. Out of the 12 Americans against whom the charges were filed, one of them is actually an informant who worked with the FBI to help them gain access to the hackers’ forum.

The operation is termed to be the largest till date and involved bringing down a forum named Darkode. It is an online forum protected by passwords and was used as a medium by hackers to sell sensitive information such as the passwords, tools and methods to hack computers as well as was used to share and sell malware applications.

Darkode, according to the authorities is the largest malware sharing forum in the world and involved trading of botnets. Botnets are the computers that are infected with the malware and the access to these computers are sold to hackers who can then become botnet operators by acquiring the access to these computers. The operation to bring down Darkode was christened ‘Operation Shrouded Horizon’ and was initiated a year and half ago. Rory Stephan Guidry, a 28 year old man from Louisiana has worked with the FBI in the past and hence he was approached by the FBI to help them bust Darkode.

The process to become a member of the forum required hackers to be invited by an existing forum member after which the invited members had to display their hacking skills. To prove his efficiency and to gain the trust of other forum members, Guidry stole the botnet of Lizard Squad that brought down PlayStation and Xbox live networks on the Christmas Day last year. Guidry supplied this code to the forum to gain their trust and get onto the inside from where he helped the FBI.

Despite this, Guidry himself was charged and arrested by the FBI claiming that that he shared malware and allowed the other forum members to gain an access to the botnet. Despite working for the interests of the FBI, Guidry is behind the bars and this will deter other hackers in the future to trust the federal agencies such as the FBI.

Bharti Airtel launches 4G services

Bharti Airtel announced the launch of its 4G services on 6thAugust and has introduced its Infinity Plans in 296 cities in India. Reliance Jio has planned for the launch of its 4G services in December, but Airtel has taken the lead by launching it months before Reliance.

The objective of the company for the launch of the 4G service on such a large scale is to reduce the burden of revenue generation from its Voice Services. Voice Services currently account for 75 percent of the total revenue of Bharti Airtel and the company seems to have planned to increase its market share in the internet segment by launching the 4G services. This is expected to increase the revenue of the company considerably.

For the existing customers of Airtel in these 296 cities, upgrading to 4G is fairly easy. They will by default receive an SMS allowing them to upgrade to 4G. If they do not receive an SMS, they can visit Airtel 4G SIM swap webpage and apply for the SIM card. The company claims that the new SIM card will be delivered to the address of the applicant in about 4 hours.

Once the new SIM is received, the users have to send a text message to 121 and mention the 20 digit number printed on the back of their new SIM. They will instantly receive an SMS with the settings for the new SIM and activation of their 4G service.

There are four Infinity Plans that are available to the subscribers. The basic one starts at Rs.999 and offers unlimited Airtel to Airtel calls along with 3GB of data. The other plans are – Rs.1499 with 5GB data and unlimited calls, Rs.1999 with 7GB data and unlimited calls and Rs2999 with 15GB data and unlimited calls.

Windows 10 – Release and Review

The much awaited date of 29th July has come and gone and the Windows 10 operating system is not officially available to all. However, it was available for the last couple of months and for beta testing since last year. The final built is out in the market and the users can get this new version of Windows.

With Windows 8, Microsoft tried to incorporate something new. Microsoft realised the importance of touch screen and accordingly made changes to the Windows 8 version. However, it was not effective enough and the OS had problems with the traditional keyboard and mouse based controls. Windows 8 was almost a fiasco for Microsoft. The company did away with the traditional start menu but this affected the acceptability of the OS among the users. Users since Windows 95 are used to using the Start Menu and have been quite familiar with it. An attempt to eliminate it created problems for Microsoft.

This is evident from the percentage of the computers that run Windows. Still 70 percent of the computers use Windows 7 and Windows XP while only 25 percent run Windows 8. Microsoft also subsequently released Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update hoping that it will change the fortunes but could not succeed much. In the mobile market, Android and iOS dominated and Windows 8 had very limited acceptability.

Microsoft then decided to change the game and declared that they will be releasing the ‘Last Version’ of the Windows OS in Windows 10. According to the company, it will be the last Windows version and henceforth only the updates will be released for Windows 10. Unlike earlier when the company would release a newer version of Windows every few years, there will not be any new version after Windows 10. Existing users of original Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 can get their operating systems updated to Windows 10 for free for the next one year.

Security issues with Smartwatches

Smartwatches are the latest technology trends with even players like Apple foraying into the smartwatch market. Apple Watch was launched earlier this year and Samsung Gear poses a tough challenge to Apple. Wearable from other smartphone manufacturers such as LG are already in the market. The smartwatch market is hot and is only growing exponentially. However, the rising popularity of the smartwatches also make them vulnerable to several security threats from hackers.

Smartwatches mean new doorways for hackers to access personal and professional information of the users wearing these watches. A study conducted by Hewlett-Packard has confirmed it and has proven that the security measures used by smartwatches are inadequate and they are highly prone to hacking and other security breaches.

All of these watches use TLS and SSL encryptions but many of them still use SSL v2 and can be hacked using POODLE attack. Also, these watches have poor user interface and 30 percent of them have web applications that have cloud enabled interface. This means that they can be attacked using account harvesting methods and hackers can make unlimited attempts to guess the passwords. Another major security issue is that 30 percent of these watches do not have two factor authentication and do not get locked even after 5 failed login attempts.

70 percent of these smartwatches do not receive timely firmware updates and that makes them vulnerable to hacking attacks. Apart from regular username and password information and other confidential data, smartwatches store even very personal user data such as health records and heart pulse rate. With the easy manner in which they can be hacked, means that these are vulnerable to several security threats and even the most basic of the data of the individuals are prone to risks of being compromised by hackers who can gain easy access to such information.

Why iPhone 6 and iOS 8 cannot replace Android

It has been a while now that iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 8 have been released. Until the previous versions of iPhone, the phones had much smaller screens as compared to Android phones that were termed as Phablets since they look a combination of phones and tablets. Now that Apple has launched a larger phone and a more customisable operating system in the form of iOS 8 (as compared to the previous versions of iOS), Apple is trying to bridge the gap that has been created by bigger and better Android Phones.

However despite the new phones from Apple, these still cannot replace the quintessential Android Phones. Android Phones for one have much better resolution and pixel per inch. This makes the images look sharper and therefore the display of several of the Android devices are much better than those of the iPhones.

Secondly, Android phones are much cheaper that iPhones. When it comes to value and utility, Android devices are much cheaper than iPhones. Android phones are much more cost effective and this makes them a better ‘value for money’ proposition. In most of the cases, high specification Android phones come at almost half the price of an iPhone 6.

Batteries of iPhones cannot be removed and if there is any issue with the battery, the process to replace it is much more complex. Similarly, iPhones only sport internal memory and do not have slots for expanding memory by inserting external memory cards. Also, most of the Android phones have more RAM than iPhones.

Customisation is the most important feature of Android phones. Android is open source and it is easy to make applications compatible with Android as compared to iOS. Likewise, due to its open architecture, Android is much more flexible and robust.

Your Smartphones are tracking your activities

A study done by a research team at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University has revealed that your smartphones are tracking your activities at an average of 3 minutes. The study has revealed some shocking facts about smartphones and the applications installed on them.

Several commonly used mobile applications have been tracking user activities more frequently than needed. It is a commonly known fact that smartphone applications generally collect large volume of data frequently. Every time you have installed an application, you must have realised that the application has requested for specific information about your smartphone and the data on the phone. The collected data generally consists of the information pertaining to the location of the users. The study included tracking the activities of 23 individuals while asking them to use their smartphones in a regular manner. A specially designed software application was used for this research and it monitored the data regarding the location of the users. The collected data revealed that several commonly used Android applications tracked users 6200 over a period of 2 weeks. This means that at an average of 3 minutes, the applications collect information about the users.
Android applications which need to collect the information about the location due to their nature also collect information more frequently than needed. For example applications like weather services collected information more frequently than actually needed. A similar report from The Wall Street Journal reported the findings that applications like ‘The Weather Channel’ collected the device’s location every 10 minutes while ‘Groupon’ which offers local deals based on the location of the users tracked user’s locations of one of the participants 1062 times in a span of two weeks.
The participants of Carnegie Mellon University research changed the settings of their smartphones immediately after the research findings were reported.

Antivirus apps are removed from ios app store

Without any official notification, Apple is removing support for antivirus apps from its App store. Though there is no official warning, it is evident that Apple is withdrawing support to apps which pertain to antimalware or antivirus categories.
Intego’s VirusBarrier is one such app which has gone off limits. Another antivirus app ‘The Anti-Virus detective’, which was available till December, has also been brought down. The changes in policy have not been explicitly explained by Apple, but it is evident that Apple is removing support for the Antimalware and Antivirus apps.
Antivirus apps have never been the forte of Apple and it has resulted in several security breaches in the past. Few months ago there were leakages of private images of various Hollywood celebrities. This reveals the vulnerability of Apple and the iOS. Despite this, Apple though not openly, has been gradually reducing support for its Antivirus app segment. There are other apps like Trend Micro Mobile, Norton and McAfee which are currently available on app store. However, the shift in Apple’s policies with regards to Antivirus apps and the past history of peoples’ personal data being compromised; creates apprehensions towards the security of data on iOS and Apple devices.
Apple needs to ensure that these breaches do not occur in future and that there is more security provided for data. Removal of support for Antivirus apps is a step backwards and will not be good for Apple’s reputation. However, it also gives an opportunity to other Antivirus app developers to develop applications which provide security to iOS. The changes in policy will be more evident in future and it needs to be seen whether this move will in any way impact sale of Apple products. meet hackers

Now transfer money via your facebook

Facebook has announced the launch of its new feature which allows users to transfer money directly through the Social Media website and application. This feature however is currently being launched only for the US based users.

Users in the US can use the messenger app of Facebook to send money. With this announcement, Facebook has entered into the mobile payment segment and wants the leverage their large number of users for this new feature. The feature is being made available for Facebook’s iOS and Android based Messenger app as well as the messaging box on Facebook. It requires adding of debit card details to one’s account.

For sending money, users need to send a message to the intended recipient. The next step requires tapping on the $ symbol and entering the amount to be transferred. The recipients also need to add their card details the first time. Once they receive the message, they need to open the conversation box. The transaction is effected instantaneously and it would take one to three business days for the money to be credited.
Facebook has specified the security measures being adopted by them. There are multiple levels of applications and hardware for protecting the user details as these include debit card and financial details. These details are stored in a secured environment and are on a separate platform from the one which has Facebook’s member details.

Facebook intends to provide a secure platform which enables users to transact instantaneously online and the large number of users that Facebook already has will benefit them immensely. Once this feature is made available to the users in the United States, Facebook would launch this new feature globally and this could be the next big thing in the mobile payments domain.

How to choose better gadgets

How to choose better gadgets
This is the only way we can make you stick to the pledge that you will no longer buy gadgets in blissful ignorance!

This is the only way we can make you stick to the pledge that you will no longer buy gadgets in blissful ignorance!

Have you ever thought why one power bank is costlier than another? Why hard disks are passe (almost)? Why you can still trust a cheating partner, but not a pirated anti-virus? How the dude who installed the `free wi-fi router' at your place made a fool out of you? How anti-radiation chips undo the harm done by the heap of devices around you? If you don't know the answers to the above, leave everything else that you are doing right now and read this buyer's guide.

Power Bank

Mobile makers have over committed and under-delivered on battery back-up, which is why power banks have become the new fad.Genius buys it like: I don't subscribe to the `I'll buy anything that's cheap and Chinese' school of thought because I want more than just the basics. My power bank should charge multiple devices simultaneously, not waste energy while charging the plugged-in device, and quickly charge itself and the devices. Then, it should automatically turn itself off when idle, should be certified for safety by safety certifications like EEE, 6 Way Circuit Protection or any other popular safety standard agency.

Techxpert: Sudip De, vice-president, Adata, says, "Unlike the power bank, your mobile device is not cheap, so, if you buy a faulty product, it will damage your device."

Anti-Virus Software

If you ever meet someone who has purchased an anti-virus and not downloaded a pirated version of it, most likely, you are hallucinating because such people don't exist, and this, when anti-virus is one of the most crucial computer tools.Genius buys it like: Does my system have the RAM and processor required to run the anti-virus? Is the software itself compatible with my system? Will I be able to erase the data if the system gets stolen and click pictures of the thief when he uses my system? Does it have bootable rescue?

Will the anti-virus be able to defend itself when a virus tries to disable it? If it does all of this, I will buy it.Techxpert: Pankaj Jain, director, Eset India, says, "Sadly, security comes last for an anti-virus purchaser; price is first. The biggest loss of a pirated anti-virus user is that they don't get the support from the developer, so if one fine day, the system crashes, the user will have no one to go to for help."

An anti-virus should be anti-virus, anti-malware, antiTrojan, antirootkit, antiphishing, give email and instant messaging protection, be certified by independent testing agencies and labs, be fast, scan cloud and have 24x7 support mechanism.

Mobile-scan app

With growing internet activity on smartphones, a mobile scan app will soon be a must.Genius buys it like: My scan app should not consume too much battery, it should provide add-on features like tracking over and above basic scanning, blocking inappropriate websites and prohibiting downloads from non-Apple and non-Android app-stores, Most importantly, it should let me completely wipe out the data on the phone in case of theft.Techxpert: Govind Rammurthy, MD & CEO, eScan, says, "The app should warn any transmissions of contact lists and should have the ability to block the same, detect transactions that use mobile-wallets andor other forms of mobile-money and store records, transaction details on the cloud."

Routers

Don't just blame your mobile operator for the snailpaced internet; your `free' router might be at fault.Genius buys it like: I will buy a router that is capable of handling high-speed, that lets me create small networks with limited use for guests, has parental control, is low in radiation and lets me manage media and connects multiple devices.Techxpert: Subhodeep Bhattacharya, regional director, India & SAARC, Netgear, says, "A router is the hub of the digital ecosys tem, and if it's built around an ignorantly purchased router, all the thrill that you expect from your high-end gadgets will come to a naught."

SSDs

These compact, superfast, durable and energy-efficient data storage solutions will change the way you store data.Genius buys it like: I'll buy an SSD as it's smaller, sturdier and faster than hard disks. It should preferably fit in the camera too, and have shockproof capabilities for accidental drops.Techxpert: M A Mannan, country manager - India, Corsair Memory, says, "No SSD is a poor performer but one with a 40,000 IOPS or more is better."

Radiation protection chip

With wireless gadgets starting to rule our lives, an anti-radiation chip, which protects you from electromagnetic radiation emitted by phones and other personal electronic devices, is a must-have.Genius buys it like: The chip has to be tested and approved for its capabilities at warding off the side-effects of benefits, by a medical institution in India.Techxpert: Pranav Poddar, MD, Synergy Environics, says, "A phone should not be used for more than six minutes in an hour and be kept at least 15-25 mm away from the body at all times. Since this is not possible, you need something, like an anti-radiation chip, that will let you use devices for extended time.

Facebook introduces 'suicide alarm'

Facebook introduces 'suicide alarm'
Facebook is rolling out a new feature for suicide prevention that allows users to report suicidal posts on the social networking site.
WASHINGTON: Facebook is rolling out a new feature for suicide prevention that allows users to report suicidal posts on the social networking site and also contact a helpline or another friend for guidance.

Facebook has announced updated tools that provide more resources, advice and support to people who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts and their concerned friends and family members.

The new effort is part of a collaboration between Facebook and researchers at Forefront: Innovations in Suicide Prevention, an interdisciplinary organization based in the University of Washington's School of Social Work.

When someone sees a post that suggests its author might be considering suicide, they can click on a dropdown menu and report the post to Facebook.

The person who flags the post also has the option to message the potentially suicidal person, contact another Facebook friend for support or connect with a trained professional at a suicide helpline for guidance.

Facebook will then review the reported post. "We have teams working around the world, 24/7, who review any report that comes in. They prioritize the most serious reports, like self-injury, and send help and resources to those in distress," Rob Boyle, Facebook Product Manager, and Nicole Staubli, Facebook Community Operations Safety Specialist wrote in a Facebook post.

If the poster is thought to be in distress, a series of screens will be launched automatically when that person next logs onto Facebook, with suggestions for getting help, 'UW Today' reported.

The responses link to a number of positive options, including videos from Now Matters Now, an online programme started by Forefront research scientist Ursula Whiteside that uses real-life accounts of people who have struggled with suicidal thoughts to provide research-based coping strategies.

"Often, friends and family who are the observers in this situation don't know what to do," said Holly Hetherington, a Facebook content strategist working on the project.

"They're concerned, but they're worried about saying the wrong thing or somehow making it worse. Socially, mental illness and thoughts about suicide are just not something we talk about," Hetherington said.

Stephen Paul Miller, Forefront's operations manager, said that one advantage of the Facebook tools is that they can be used by anyone: a concerned friend, a grandparent or a colleague.

"You don't need to have a degree to be able to meet somebody where they are in their pain and connect them to a resource," he said.

"You just need to know that there's somebody who can help you facilitate that connection, and that's what the Facebook project has the ability to do. This has the potential to save so many lives," Miller said.

World's first hands-free smartphone for disabled launched

World's first hands-free smartphone for disabled launched
The phone comes with an advanced computer vision algorithm and a front-facing camera that track user's head movements and allow them to control a cursor on screen.
JERUSALEM: An Israeli company claims to have developed the first completely hands-free smartphone that can allow disabled users to control the device with head movement.

The smartphone created by Sesame Enable is designed for people with spinal cord injuries, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), cerebral palsy and other disabilities that hamper the use of hands and arms.

The Sesame is an Android smartphone that is equipped with proprietary head-tracking technology, 'Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA)' reported.

The phone comes with an advanced computer vision algorithm and a front-facing camera that track user's head movements and allow them to control a cursor on screen.

The cursor is essentially a virtual finger, letting users do what others can with a regular smartphone. The $1,000-phone recently won a "Verizon Powerful Answers' Award" with $1 million in prize money.

Its developer Giora Livne, who himself is disabled, now plans to give away about 30 Sesame smartphones to people with disabilities nominated by their peers.

Livne came up with the idea after seeing a TV demonstration for a game controlled with head movements.

With a background in electrical engineering, he recognized the technology's potential to help him, and others.

He now regularly texts and sends WhatsApp messages to his friends and three children, and the phone has helped ease some of the social isolation experienced by many disabled people, especially the young.

" What is Ello? " - MAYBE A BLACK SHEEP

  ?????

HERE IS WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT ITSELF

The main attraction, according to the company, is that unlike Facebook or Twitter, Ello will remain ad-free, ad infinitum. And right now, the debate in Silicon Valley circles — Wired, The Wall Street Journal, Recode — is whether that claim is unrealistic.

Here's another question: Why all the fuss?
Here's one guess: Never underestimate the power of the velvet rope.

We will have to wait a bit more inorder to be a ello member .
SO stay tuned!!
